Inherited from Chagatai شهر, from Classical Persian شهر (šahr), from Middle Persian 𐭱𐭲𐭥𐭩 (štry /⁠šahr⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *xšaθram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšatrám. Cognate with Uyghur شەھەر / sheher / шәһәр.
