From Proto-Finnic *savu, from Proto-Finno-Permic *sawe (smoke). Cognates include Ingrian savvu, Karelian savu, Livonian so’v, Ludian savu, Veps savu, Võro sau, Votic savvu, Northern Sami suovva, Erzya сувтамс (suvtams, to fumigate) and possibly also сув (suv, fog, curtain).
