From Proto-Vietic *rɔːc, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ruuc ~ *ruəc. Cognate with Muong rọch, Arem rùəc, Proto-Katuic *rɔɔc (whence Pacoh roiq) and Mon ကြုတ်.
