[edit]From a contraction of the particle ne (“not”) + willan (“to want”). The same development happened with nytan (“to not know”), nesan (“to not be”), nabban (“to not have”), and nāgan (“to not own”). Cognate with Old Frisian nilla, nella (“to not want”).
