Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Dutch nederlaghe (15th c.), probably after early modern German Niederlage, from Middle High German niderlāge (“the act of sinking to the ground”). Analysable as neder (“nether, down”) + laag (“layer”), though the latter word is used in the obsolete sense of “act or way of lying” (for which now ligging).
