From Proto-Vietic *k-nɛːŋ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *gnaiŋ ~ *gniəŋ. Cognate with Muong nenh, Tho [Cuối Chăm] nɛːŋ¹ ("tooth"), Pacoh kineng (tooth), Khmer ស្នែង (snaeng), Bahnar sơnĕnh, hơnĕnh (tooth).
