From Malay kerbau, from Proto-Malayic *kAr(ə)baw, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian [Term?], ultimately from Proto-Mon-Khmer *krpiʔ ~ *krpiiw ~ *krpuʔ ~ *(kr)puh (buffalo). Cognate with Khmer ក្របី (krɑbəy, water buffalo), Javanese ꦏꦼꦧꦺꦴ (kebo), Tagalog kalabaw.
