[edit]From Ottoman Turkish قارداش (kardaş, “sibling”), from Old Anatolian Turkish قردآش (kardaş, “sibling”), equivalent to karın (“womb”) + -daş (“fellow of, having in common, sharing”).

Usage notes
[edit]- The term is gender-neutral, gender is indicated with phrases erkek kardeş (“brother”, literally “male sibling”) and kız kardeş (“sister”, literally “girl sibling”).
- This term is not used to refer to one's own older sibling; abi (“older brother”) or abla (“older sister”) are used instead.
