[edit]From Old Norse dunna, from Proto-Germanic *dusnǭ (“the brown one; female duck”), from Proto-Germanic *dusnaz (“brown”); whence also Icelandic dunna, Norwegian dunne. Compare also English dunnock (“hedge sparrow, hedge warbler”), Scottish Gaelic tunnag.
