Cognate with Middle Irish duille, from Old Irish duilne, from a singulative form *dolinyā; both are from Proto-Indo-European *dʰelh₁- (“blossom”), whence also Ancient Greek θάλλω (thállō, “to bloom”), Old English dile (“dill”), and Old Armenian դալար (dalar, “green, fresh”).
