[edit]First attested in the Jiyun 《集韻 (Jíyùn)》, 1037, as Late Old Korean 𢃺. Also attested in the Jīlín lèishì (鷄林類事 / 계림유사), 1103, as Late Old Korean 及.
In the hangul script, first attested in the Hunminjeong'eum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446, as Middle Korean 깁〯 (Yale: kǐp).
Displaced by Mandarin loanword 비단 (緋緞, bidan).
Pronunciation

- Phonetic hangul: [깁(ː)]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
