おう
Grade: S
kan'on
Alternative spelling
(kyūjitai)

From Middle Chinese (MC 'uw|'uwX), originally meaning “to vomit” (ʔəuX, modern Mandarin ǒu, Cantonese au2). Later taken from the first character of the transliteration 欧羅巴 (Yōroppa, Europe), which is identified with ʔəu (modern Mandarin ōu, Cantonese au1).

The 漢音 (kan'on) reading, so likely a later borrowing.
