Glyph origin

Historical forms of the character

According to the Shuowen Jiezi, a pictogram (象形) of an animal, with for its ears and for its head. The feet, originally depicted as in the variant 𠾧, simplified as .[1]

The Shuowen explanation of the character conflicts with several scholars. Huang Dekuan considers the character to be a compound of with added as a distinguishing mark,[2] making it a phono-semantic compound (形聲形声) . This aligns with Ji Xusheng's criticism of the pronunciation given in the Shuowen (fanqie 許救切). He argues that there is no evidence supporting it, while there's proof of it instead being pronounced the same as (OC *taːn, *djan, *djanʔ, *djans). According to him, however, should be a ideogram (指事) of , with the component omitted. [3]
