   1. genre of classical poetry dedicated to mockery of someone, often vulgar
      • c. 1120, Sanā'ī Ghaznawī, دیوان سنایی‎^[1]:

        نه یکی را به خشم کردم هجو
        نه یکی را به طمع بستودم
        به هوا و به شهوت نفسی
        جان پاكيزه را نیالودم

        na yakē rā ba xišm kardam hajw
        na yakē rā ba tama' bisutūdam
        ba hawā u ba šahwat-i nafsī
        jān-i pākīza rā nay-ālūdam

        Not a single person did I lampoon in anger,
        Not a single person did I praise out of greed.
        I did not sully my pristine soul
        With the lust and libido of the self.
