[edit]Inherited from Old Ruthenian приꙗтель (prijatelʹ), from Old East Slavic приꙗтель (prijatelĭ), from Proto-Slavic *prijàteľь. By surface analysis, прыя́ць (pryjácʹ) + -цель (-cjelʹ). Cognate with Russian прия́тель (prijátelʹ) and Ukrainian при́ятель (prýjatelʹ).
