Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Turkic *bɨńĺ(ɨk) (cat).

The word may stem from contamination with mechin ("monkey") from Mongolic languages. The suffix -k in forms like pish-ik/mish-ik is a diminutive marker, possibly borrowed from Iranian Kurdish piši/pišila or Pashto rizō. Scholars also link the base mish- to Persian mush ("mouse, rat") or Mongolic mis/mił.

Onomatopoeic origins are suggested by A.M. Shcherbak, with pyshyk derived from pysh (used to call cats). Mongolic forms like mis/müs may have influenced Turkic terms like Altai miy-ak ("cat, tiger") and Tuvan miy-yt ("cat"). Diminutive forms, like Old Uyghur mish-kich and Uzbek pishә, also show Turkic influence. Borrowing into Romanian is noted, with the form *piše ("cat") derived from Turkish dialect *pisi(k). [1]

Cognate with Turkish pisi, Kyrgyz мышык (mışık), Uzbek mushuk, Azerbaijani and Turkmen pişik, Tatar песи (pesi), песәй (pesäy), Karakalpak pıshıq, Kumyk мишик (mişik), Uyghur مۈشۈك (müshük), Old Turkic miškič [2] with alternative variant include muš.[3]
