Ancient Greek
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Has been compared with Sanskrit ग्रीवा (grīvā́, “neck”), Proto-Slavic *griva (“mane”) and Latvian grīva (“estuary”), all from Proto-Indo-European *gʷer- (“to swallow”) (see *gʷriHwéh₂ (“throat”)). However, according to Beekes, a much better etymology is offered by δειράς (deirás), suggesting a Pre-Greek origin.
