Re-transclude after validation

[edit]

You don't have to re-transclude after validation. The software just takes time to catch up sometimes. --EncycloPetey (talk) 06:40, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Oh, thank you for telling me. I found it odd that sometimes it did and sometimes it did not. FPTI (talk) 06:44, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the validation. One request though. Would you mind not to join lines though? It was a deliberate choice. And for consistency of style, it should be either done for all pages or none. Thanks again. Mpaa (talk) 11:08, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Absolutely, I will not join lines in the future. Sorry for the inconvenience. FPTI (talk) 19:34, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
No problem, thanks again. Mpaa (talk) 20:22, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Film transcriptions

[edit]

Hey, thanks for going back and validating some of my movie transcriptions! WikiProject Film is a currently active project, so I'd suggest you join if you're interested in working on movies. You can also proofread movies from scratch, using the WikiProject Film draft process. There's now even a video tutorial on Commons that shows how to do it (hopefully it helps). SnowyCinema (talk) 20:30, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! I find it enjoyable to validate films, maybe after I get the proofreading a little more under my belt I will join you! FPTI (talk) 01:53, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Spaces

[edit]

Hi, just noticed your edit comment in passing and wanted to affirm your approach. In general we do collapse the spaces in "had n't", "should n't", &c. There are a few times when we would keep them, but that will be documented on the Index talk page with the reason for keeping them or a comment on the page. The main reason to keep would be a book that was using them to represent a dialect for one of the speakers, but if all speakers have the same dialect, then collapse them. Thanks, Beeswaxcandle (talk) 08:49, 11 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Somewhat similar space thing, and since you said that you are new to wikis, I'm not sure if you know that you can subscribe to individual threads: Page talk:W. E. B. Du Bois - The Gift of Black Folk.pdf/22. In case you need help subscribing or with anything else, let me know. —Justin (koavf)TCM 10:10, 12 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Ppoem

[edit]

Hi FTPI,

Thanks for your edits on The Tale of Beowulf thus far. If I may, a few tips and corrections follow:

When using ppoem, at the end of one section, use end=close, and the beginning of the next, start=open (rather than leaving start=follow, end=follow always).

Please add headers, even if they aren't transcluded. I have edited the index page so that these should automatically populate.

Some lines of the text start with a small indent. If you see any, please use {{em}}.

I am also adding section tags whenever each "chapter" starts and finishes, i.e. ## s1 ## and ## s2 ##. I can go back through and add these during transclusion if it is unclear where/how to place these.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks, TeysaKarlov (talk) 22:14, 1 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your help on the use of ppoem! I am learning and I appreciate your assistance.
Regarding headers, I generally don't see the use in spending a lot of time adding them. SnowyCinema has an essay that convinced me. But I didn't know that you could automatically populate them in the index page- believe it or not, I had been filling them in over and over by "hand" in previous works before I decided it wasn't worth the effort. Thank you, in future I might just automatically populate them if it seems easy enough. -- FPTI (talk) 08:32, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, headers and footers (naming page numbers, work name, chapter name on top or bottom of the page) are the bane of my existence. I can see the argument that they show the page number so would be useful for that, but even then I feel like it's only a marginal helping (maybe some editor might be in a situation where the page image doesn't load for them so they forget the page number, but realistically who among us is ever in that situation?). I personally value speed and quantity in the main namespace over nuances in our draft space (which is what Page effectively is), since WS is probably millions of works behind being even close to an exhaustive resource, so cutting time on a per-work basis is valuable... But again, all of that was just my personal opinion so take it as you will. SnowyCinema (talk) 15:20, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Large-scale validation

[edit]

Hi, would you be interested in validating entire texts? If so, I have quite a list of Index choices I can prepare for you that I'd like to get validated, thanks. SnowyCinema (talk) 15:28, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sure, I would be interested! I've done seven entire texts so far, mostly sticking to the monthly challenge as of yet. But I'm always open for more recommendations. You can see what I'm working on at this time on my userpage. Right now I'm finishing proofreading 20 Hrs. 40 Min. and validating Scarface. -- FPTI (talk) 15:32, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Awesome! Can I put a list of them on a user subpage such as User:FPTI/Indexes? SnowyCinema (talk) 15:42, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, feel free to make that user subpage. -- FPTI (talk) 16:07, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

If you don't want that page, it is best to mark it with {{sdelete}} so that the administrators know to delete it. -- Beardo (talk) 02:37, 21 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Done and yes please do next time. SnowyCinema (talk) 04:01, 21 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Page:Poems Welby.djvu/7

[edit]

After your change, for me it does not display right (too far up).

I assume for you it did not work then since you changed it.

I tried to change it to px to see if that was the problem.

Does it display normally for you now ? — Alien333 (what I did & why I did it wrong) 05:12, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it displays correctly for me now. How odd. Great job, and what an interesting book of poetry- it seems like Welby was romantically interested in women, although I can find nothing else about this online. -- FPTI (talk) 05:14, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Note: the em (that was I think the problem) was my fault, I'd tried to fix a transclusion problem caused by a too-large image resized by layout. — Alien333 (what I did & why I did it wrong) 05:15, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

can't and don't

[edit]

First for sure: Thank you for the effort on CQ!

Second: Sorry about your stomach.

Third: I am not sure what the convention is here about separating the contracted portion of the phrase (shouldn't vs. should n't) but the book (C Q) was consistent about not separating can't and don't and separating all of the others. I opted to separate as en.ws seems to be proud of reproducing text the way it was originally printed (with some exception for free flowing quote paragraphs where every printed newline starts with a left quote, which I have seen but not worked on.)

So, while proofing, I tried to be consistent throughout the book with making it as the printed version was. Your validation effort was both difficult on your stomach and left the book in an inconsistent state. So, after some other business, I am going to undo those edits (and leave the de-captialization goodness you found and altered).

So, I am asking that you consider to not leave books in an inconsistent state when validating. And, I might be wrong, but also to "start down the path of understanding" the "as printed" mindset that is here.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 14:08, 7 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Got it, thanks. FPTI (talk) 15:53, 7 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Creation by Evolution

[edit]

All the work's images are available at Commons. There is a link to the category on the Index Talk page and also from the Main page of the work in Mainspace. --EncycloPetey (talk) 00:34, 12 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

I've noticed that you are regularly reducing double vertical spacing down to a single line. Unlike Wikipedia, we regularly use vertical spacing by using two blank lines. I'm not sure whether this is a habit, or whether you've set some editing tools to reduce the vertical spacing, but it is quite often intentional. --EncycloPetey (talk) 02:40, 23 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

I assumed it was usually an oversight when it's at the end of a page. In terms of spacing within a page, I have reduced it when it appears that the gap is bigger than it is on the page, and am trying to make the presented wikitext look more similar to the spacing presented in the original.
For instance, on this diff, where you added a line before "Origin of the Egg-Laying Mammals", I had only one line gap because the original page had only a one line gap.
Or are you saying that, since Wikisource has a gap between paragraphs anyway, there should be two blank lines to indicate there was a larger gap between paragraphs in the original? That makes sense. Hadn't thought of it that way. TY -- FPTI (talk) 05:19, 23 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
For instance, hopefully this diff is what you were looking for? If not, I'm not following. FPTI (talk) 05:43, 23 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Could you add a template in the Commons file description indicating what free license you wish to release the recording under? Currently, there is a template indicating that the underlying text is public domain, but not one for the recording. Prospectprospekt (talk) 18:36, 14 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Ooops! Thanks, must have forgot. FPTI (talk) 23:57, 14 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Did you realise you just replied to a message from 13 years ago? :D (not one from me, I hasten to add, but I got an email message from Wikipedia because at some point I must have contributed in some way to this text! PeterR2 (talk) 17:26, 25 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes, but considering the work we're talking about is almost 270 years old, that's barely any time at all! :p FPTI (talk) 03:33, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
