Narrative poem, first published in 1594. It recounts the legend of the rape of the noblewoman Lucretia by Sextus Tarquinius, the son of Roman king Lucius Tarquinius Superbus; an act which, according to the legend, led to the overthrowing of the Roman monarchy and the establishment of the Roman Republic.
