Zorhan Ludovic Bassong (born May 7, 1999) is a Canadian professional soccer player who plays as a left-back for Sporting Kansas City in Major League Soccer.

Early life

[edit]

Bassong was born in Toronto, Ontario to a Belgian Walloon mother and Cameroonian father.[2] At three months old, he and his family moved to Montreal, where he began playing youth soccer at age five with CS Longueuil.[2]

Club career

[edit]

Bassong joined Cercle Brugge from Lille on January 29, 2019.[3] He was released by the Belgian club on July 8, 2020.[4]

On December 1, 2020, it was announced that Bassong had joined Canadian MLS side CF Montréal on a two-year contract, beginning in the 2021 season, with options for 2 additional years.[5] After the 2022 season, his option was declined and he departed the club.[6]

In January 2023, Bassong signed with Romanian club Argeș Pitești.[7] He made eight appearances as the club was relegated to the Liga II at the end of the season.

In June 2023, Bassong signed with the reigning Liga I champions, Farul Constanța.[8] In September 2023 Bassong and Farul Constanța agreed to mutually terminate his deal.[9]

In December 2023, he returned to MLS, signing with Sporting Kansas City for the 2024 season, with club options for 2025 and 2026.[10]

International career

[edit]

Bassong made his debut for Canada in a 4–1 friendly win over Barbados on January 10, 2020.[11] He was later named to the Canadian U23 provisional roster for the 2020 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship on February 26, 2020.[12] Bassong was named to the final squad ahead of the rescheduled tournament on March 10, 2021.[13]
