Nominator's rationale: Per Category:Musicians by band, "categories should not be created when only one member has an article." The result of the discussion was: create Category:Television producers from New York City; no consensus on deleting Category:Television producers from New York (state). Propose splitting Category:Television producers from New York (state) to Category:Television producers from New York City and Category:Television producers from New York (state)

Nominator's rationale: Of the 53 people listed, 45 are from New York City and 8 from another place in New York State. I don't know what's the best way to proceed. My hunch would be to rename the category, let a bot move everybody, then manually assign the 8 people back to New York (state). In truth, I'm not convinced that most of the Category:American television producers by state tree is needed at all. It could certainly be defended as a defining and categorizable attribute for New York City and Los Angeles specifically, since the overwhelming majority of notable television producers in the United States live and work in one of those two cities — but where else they were born and raised before moving to NYC or LA to work in television production is not a defining attribute of a producer. Once diffused per nom, there will be only eight people left in the state-level category. The same goes for Category:Television producers from California, where virtually everybody could be diffused to LA, and the only other two sibling categories — Category:Television producers from Pennsylvania and Category:Television producers from West Virginia — are both WP:SMALLCATs with no defining reason to exist at all. So my inclination would be to move the Big Appleites to Category:Television producers from New York City per nom, but to delete the state level category as not needed. What's noteworthy and categorizable about television producers is where they work as television producers, not where they grew up as kids. Bearcat (talk) 23:29, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I support Bearcat's proposal – move the whole category to "TV producers from NYC" and deal with exceptions manually. @Michael Bednarek: Given that Wikipedia indulged in 16 years of ambiguity between NY and NYC, we were bound to find such cases when attempting to categorize things more precisely. What is happening when an editor notices an incongruity in response to a bot move is precisely the kind of "more thought" you are asking for. Robots do the bulk of the tedious work and their output actually help us identify such cases and rectify them with some human savvy. — JFG ^talk 08:45, 9 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have no objection to a nomination to delete all four state categories, leaving behind 2 categories for the cities; however, this should be done as a single nom of all 4 states. It's technically easy to use thew bot to popul;ate the NYC category without deleting the state category - simply create the city category, list it at WP:CFDW, and once the bot is done delist it and move the 8 back manually.
