Speedy deletion nomination of 4OUR

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on 4OUR, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. [edit]

I recently deleted the page for 4OUR, the reasons being for notability, promotional, and copyright purposes. I'll explain each one, since it doesn't look like there was ever really an attempt to explain this so far.

The first issue is that of copyright. It looks like you took this directly from the radio station's "about us" page and made very few changes to the material. Portions were taken word for word and other sections from the station's page were just closely paraphrased, which is still considered to violate WP:COPYVIO. Copyright is automatically assumed on behalf of the original author and all content must be written in your own words. If you own the rights to the content you can submit it as fair use via WP:OTRS, but that opens up a new issue, of promotional content.

The content was also fairly promotional, as it contained wording such as "in the heartland of". This is likely because you took this from the radio station's website, where it's perfectly fine and even natural for them to write about themselves in the best light possible. However when it comes to Wikipedia, things must be written in a far more neutral manner. This is why submitting content to OTRS will still result in someone having to re-write the content, because in most cases the writing is too promotional to leave "as is".

The final issue is one of notability. It can often be difficult to show that a station meets WP:BROADCAST without something to show the channel's history. The basic gist of notability standards for radio stations is as follows:

Notability can be established by either a large audience, established broadcast history, or unique programming.

You don't really have this in the article, as you don't have anything about when the station launched or their audience size. You give an area, but not numbers itself per se. The type of material that the station broadcasts is fairly routine stuff (classic rock stations are pretty common) so it wouldn't really qualify under that. As far as the station being useful, that's not really a criteria for inclusion here per WP:ITSUSEFUL. It being useful does make it more likely that it will have a large audience (one of the criteria for inclusion) but it's not a guarantee.

The main two issues were really that it was promotional and that the article contained copyright violations. The notability was more of a third thing than anything else and if it was that alone, I would have likely just declined it and sent it to AfD. I think that the station could likely pass notability guidelines as long as you put the needed information in the article, source it, and write it in your own words.
