For you help with the tedious rail usage figures. Simply south...... walking into bells for just 6 years

I've been meaning to give this to you for a while. Keep up the good work. Simply south...... walking into bells for just 6 years 16:28, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oh no, it's him again!

[edit]

On the subject of Leyland, I'm a bit light on material for his early career. I've got Wisden up until the 1925 edition, but nothing after until he plays Test cricket apart from the odd fragment of Cardus and from the Times. I'd be extremely grateful if you could do a quick Wisden trawl for 1925-28, and particularly for the MCC tour of India in 1926-27. And of course, anything else you may have! No urgency on this one, just if or when you have the time and inclination. And I may be back for his later career as there were a few seasons when he began very poorly then scored ridiculously heavily in July and August. Cheers! Sarastro1 (talk) 11:51, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have Gibson's book, so that would be great. I'm afraid I don't have the Dodd's book, or anything else on him. Sarastro1 (talk) 16:32, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all that. And the Wisden stuff is actually more useful than it looks. I may be back, cap in hand, before too long! Cheers. Sarastro1 (talk) 17:36, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Really specific one this time! Leyland bowled far more in 1928 than ever before: the obvious explanation being the death of Roy Kilner. I don't suppose Wisden mentions this explicitly for the 1928 season? Sarastro1 (talk) 22:21, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Still in the 1929 edition, the Cricinfo copy of Leyland's cricketer of the year citation says "and a fine forcing game when it is necessary to make runs quietly", which doesn't really make sense. Could you check the original to see if it should say "quickly"? And if it does, what is the page number of the article, and I might change the citation to the paper copy. Sorry to be a pest, but the sourcing should improve from 1928 onwards! Sarastro1 (talk) 22:36, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: A thought

[edit]

Yes indeed, I'm certainly better described as more active than I am retired! That sounds like a plan with the names, I'll also add the obscure ones to disambiguation pages. I remember doing the lists of Hampshire players a couple of years back, which took an absolute age, it is a long term plan to get one done for all global first-class teams (daunting). I hope those orphan bots don't become as annoying as my old friend the CorenSearchBot! Howzat?Out!Out!Out! (talk) 23:35, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I found this on Leyland, and it's rather good. However, there is no author given. I don't suppose you could check who wrote it? And in which case, I probably need the page reference as well... Sarastro1 (talk) 22:59, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's odd. I thought you bought them to provide me with obscure page references on Yorkshire cricketers in the 1928 season. All my illusions have been shattered. Sarastro1 (talk) 23:10, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies

[edit]

Dear Johnlp,

I must apologise for barging in on your work on David Kirby. I hadn't checked to see whether anybody had been working on him recently, and when I looked at the history (after I'd done my bit) I was mortified to see that you had just created his page and were still going.

Please forgive my breach of etiquette. You might find some of my contribution useful; otherwise please feel at liberty to ditch the rest.

It was especially mortifying to me, as I admire your work. Apart from obvious love of the game and respect for the players, you bring a level of literacy and a sense of proportion that are rare among cricket Wikipedians.

Regards,

Thanks for that reassuring message. You will note the date discrepancy from the two Wisdens: did he start in 1963 or 1968? I'll leave that there for a future researcher to solve. As you say, there is so much to do; plenty of work for all of us. I'll try to be careful not to tread on toes in future. But there is still the Battle of Chris Duckworth to be fought...

Elliot

[edit]

The CU player was listed in the ACS guide to CU cricketers as Sir George Elliot 1812 to 1901 one of several Sir George Elliots including the contemporaneous industrialist. The scotish birthdate came later and put him a year younger but it was not a requirement to be in residence to play(IG Peck and JM Brearley) for the university and still isn't. Only the University match requires that qualification. The more famous Admiral Elliot was Scotish and I presume the Admiral GA Elliot, his son was the cricketer - it is too much of a co-incidence otherwise. P Bailey who compiles CA is impossible to shift if he believes something and I presume he has not seen a birth certificate and thus has not appended the 'Augustus' second name. Were GA Elliot a naval officer, he would have attended Dartmouth rather than Cambridge. By the age of 20-23 he would have likely been at sea in command of something. My father in law was a Surgeon Commander and he has free access to the Navy list but it will be December before I see him though I can get him on Skype in about a fortnight (he's on holiday at present). The issue with CA has always been that PB is unwilling to trust all but a few contributors if he himself has not seen the evidence at first hand. Hold on - by chance I have a list or two her and the one for 1848 lists him(on raising to rank of Admiral (age 36) as George Elliot - the Augustus may have been a later affectation. I would say the Admiral G Elliot is certainly the cricketer from 1831. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CDTPP (talkcontribs) 13:14, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

CUCC list

[edit]

Hey, apologies. I'd already done substantial work fore I realised you were on same task. Had to decide whether to abandon or carry on. As I had the dates, went ahead. Your list was nearly complete except for the Ws and I had those. A lot of them too! All I needed was the wikinames and I followed your lead on those. I'm doing both unis, Oxford same format – dates, scorecard version of name and then the wikiname. Wikinames hold things up. Each has to be checked for existing use. Well, cool, apologies again. Hope Xmas is good and wish you the best in 2014. --Bill (talk) 12:49, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Belated season's greetings, and another request, I'm afraid. I'm looking to see if the Abe Waddington article can be beefed up a little, having found some nice juicy scandal about him in the Yorkshire Post just after the War. With that in mind, I think his playing career needs de-statsing to get away from the list of numbers. I'd be ever so grateful if you could check the 1920, 1927, and 1928 Yorkshire summary in Wisden. And maybe the 1929 for good measure. I have the Willows versions of the rest, and get the impression that poor old Abe was not too highly thought of. So any snippets, even just "he was dreadful" would be useful. Cheers! Sarastro1 (talk) 00:19, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Albert or Alfred

[edit]

I would be inclined to move the article to A. E. Bailey, and provide both possibilities for his first name, unless we find a third source (that isn't a mirror or copy from one of the others) that clarifies one way or the other. I would be inclined to agree that CA is more likely to be right, but given that he would have been referred to by his initials during his career, this seems the safest way to go for now. If your words are meant to imply some form of threat towards me and my activities on WP, then I fear you may have come to the wrong place, because you should know that I really don't bother with that kind of nonsense. Johnlp (talk) 16:07, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, an admin User:NativeForeigner has been conducting a little investigation via the checkuser tool and, guess what, has found that User:GeorgeGrady is yet another example of Guess Who? He must be raising his bat for a double century by now, surely. I won't do anything with the above nonsense but the best thing you can do, as previously advised, is to summarily remove any and all suspicious messages on your talk page, and anywhere else you see them, per WP:DENY, WP:RBI and WP:BMB. I'm checking out tour articles at present, and busy in real life, so not editing much but will put something about tours on CRIC before long. Bye now. HCCC14 (talk) 22:15, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Page protection

[edit]

I can well understand the frustration you have expressed above (your post on 31 March) but if you had taken steps to get this page protected you would not have to put up with frequent visits from a site-banned user whose purpose is to disrupt the cricket project and make personal attacks on several of its members, using your page as a "safe haven" for his activities. His last post here was removed by an admin (see page history) and I have taken the step of formally requesting page protection here.

Page protection would have minimal to no impact on you because it merely prevents IPs and non-registered users from using the page. Apart from the banned user, your page history shows that no one other than autoregistered users has ever been here. If this page is protected, you will be able to use the site in peace. HCCC14 (talk) 18:11, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Just relax. There's no need to worry about this ongoing disruption. It's trivial. Your concern is noted, as was your serious concern for Harrias and his block. Now I suggest you let us deal with this and do something else, more productive. Cheers. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:32, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The party was selected and the fixtures listed. It is a cancelled tour and therefore requires a listing. Yes, maybe, but perhaps not in the same series as other tours, where we used the "X team in Y in 0000" convention: there never was a "South African cricket team in England in 1970" so that title would be wrong. I'm not averse to a separate article on "The South African cricket tour of England in 1970" or some such, or to it being a subsection under the more general article about the apartheid boycott which really began to take effect from that point. You added a nice method to write dob and dod on Gar Waddy. But I couldn't understand what is this 2 August 1963(1963-08-02) (aged 83)? What is df=yes? Guide me please. Xender Lourdes (talk) 18:29, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If I may ask you for one more assistance. I have nominated William Walker (Australian cricketer) for a WP:Good article status. If you can review it, it would be very nice. Hello again Johnlp. I wanted to inform you that I got my first DYK on the Wikipedia main page today. The article is William Walker. major cricket

[edit]

Hi John,

thanks for taking the time to get involved in this discussion. This page has already been taken to AfD and a consensus reached. Please see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Major_cricket. The onus is now on anyone who wishes to see the page re-instated to make their case and seek consensus before re-instating.

I am aware that you were not aware of the full situation and am now going to ask you politely since you were kind enough to get involved and are now aware of the community consensus as to this page. Please follow correct protocol and carry out the correct procedure and delete the page. I am not interested in getting in an edit war with an irate editor, perhaps as a neutral (?) third party, you can do what needs to be done. I will just mention that deliberately ignoring a community consensus is a bannable offence. Perhaps someone should have a quiet word with jack? It would be a shame to see such an enthusiastic editor permanently banned from our community.

Hi. Given the closure of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Major cricket (2nd nomination) as non-consensus I'd like to consider a possible merge of the Major cricket article to History of cricket - see the discussion I've started at Talk:Major cricket. List of Oxford University Cricket Club players

[edit]

Hello, John. I've "officially" retired from WP but still need to use it a lot for reference. I've been logged out for about a month but today I decided that it really is easier to use the site logged in, so here I am. Top of my watchlist was this list and I immediately thought: "Oh, I left that with a load of nolinks, didn't I?" You are manfully striving to improve it. Well, I won't have a lot of time and I may be absent for days on end but I'll try and help you with this one. As you are doing "B", I'll start at the bottom and work up. We've done very well with all the other English club lists but this one is in a bit of a state.

Also, you were absolutely right to revert the removal of info from Fred Titmus. This sort of issue has cropped up a number of times where a very old article has been left behind by the site's evolution, especially re MOS and inline citations. The article was written by our old friend Loganberry who normally focused on Worcestershire. It is a good article and I doubt very much if there's anything in it that is misinformation; it just needs some citations and some rephrasing to lift it from the 2006 standard to the 2016 one.

Anyway, hope all is well with you. I'll make a start on the OU players and see how we get on. Best wishes. Jack | talk page 15:16, 22 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Reference to woman's death at broadstairs railway station.

I think it would be perfectly reasonable to remove this "incident" entirely from this article. A child was killed by a train at the same station in 2019, and that isn't mentioned at all. It seems invidious to mention one but not another, and it's likely that there have been other similar events over the years before 2015. It's not really relevant to the article on the station, and Wikipedia is not a newspaper! Just delete that whole section. Johnlp (talk) 23:20, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed, after slightly rewriting, the following from Tom Flynn (umpire) until references can be provided. Please feel free to copy and paste back into article once you can add these references.

Flynn's appointment to the two Melbourne Cricket Ground Tests in the 1894–95 season proved uncontroversial, but he was also nominated to umpire the fourth Test of the series at Sydney, alongside Phillips; the match followed the New South Wales game against Victoria, and Flynn was Victoria's regular umpire between 1891 and 1895. Although he had umpired the New South Wales v Victoria matches at Sydney in the four preceding seasons and had umpired a Test there in 1892, Flynn was refused permission to travel to Sydney by his employer in Melbourne, the Fitzroy Cricket Club, for whom he was the groundsman (curator). Donating book sources!

[edit]

Hi John. Hope all is well. I'm trying build up a library of book sources here and wondered if you'd be happy to 'donate' some book you may have, and I also wondered if do if you'd be happy for me to list your username next to the entry so people could contact you for extracts? StickyWicket (talk) 15:08, 13 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@AssociateAffiliate: I have a lot of Wisdens going back to 1890 (missing some war years), and I've bought every Playfair annual since 1957 (though whether I can find them all is another matter...) Then there's rather a random lot of other cricket books, not all of them to hand. I'm also a (fairly low-key) member of ACS. Happy to help, but I'm not around much these days (and haven't been for a couple of years), and might not respond very fast to urgent pinging. Johnlp (talk) 22:58, 13 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Johnlp thanks for the reply. If you're happy with me adding the ones you have to the library that would be great. That's also a lot of Playfair's! I keep reminding myself to buy a Playfair and a Wisden each year, but at 31 I still haven't! If there's any contacts you have in the ACS would be willing to allow project members to access eBooks that would be brilliant also. Have appreciated your input in the discussions defending the project from the deletionists. All the best, StickyWicket (talk) 15:16, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AssociateAffiliate: I think with Wisden there's a danger in raising hopes that it can provide answers that other sources can't. In practice, Wisden is a bit like CricketArchive in yellow-brick form: it's a compendium of stats, with only the most cursory of editorial coverage, and it's good for verifying that certain matches took place and certain cricketers played in them, but no good for detail, and even less for "colour" or descriptive writing, except in the obits (available on cricinfo) and in the Cricketers of the Year citations. It's also, still, heavily weighted towards the English game: coverage of cricket worldwide has improved in the past 30 years, but for most of first 100 years of the editions I've got (1890 onwards) cricket outside England rated no more than a few pages, and most of that was Australian. In the 1950s, the "cricket in Pakistan" section was half a page every year, and no more. It was also, at least until 1980 (when the last of the Prestons died), appallingly snobbish: if your name was Marmaduke and you went to Winchester, you were much more likely to be singled out for attention than if your name was John Ford and you played once for Gloucestershire. Playfair is, of course, even more obviously a directory than Wisden. So I suspect your library ought to say that some WP:Cricket members have access to Wisden and Playfair and can look things up, but also to point out some of the limitations, and then maybe set aside an area where people can ask specific questions. Otherwise we stand a chance of being inundated with requests we can't then fulfil. Where Wisden is useful is in tracing the careers of prominent Test and good county players over several years: the county correspondents usually had a few pithy words on each regular player in their summaries of the previous season, and User:Sarastro1 used some of my Wisdens for his series of articles on cricketers of the 1920s and 1930s that reached GA and FA standard. It's also good on "issues", such as throwing or selectors' judgements. But for the cricketers whose biographies have proved controversial recently, it would be no help whatsoever. Unless their name was Marmaduke...
PS. I'm not really aware myself of ACS publications, aside from their work on what is, and what isn't, a first-class match (which CricketArchive follows). I'll maybe try to investigate, if I ever get time.
PPS. A lot of my books went into storage seven years ago when I moved house, and have not, so far, re-emerged. They include most of the Playfairs. I might need about seven years' notice if someone needs me to find something in one of them. The Wisdens are at least on my shelves here. Johnlp (talk) 17:24, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I hope the two of you won't mind me butting in, but my Playfairs are rather more accessible than John's, by the sound of it. I have 1965 and then all of them from 1968 to date, so not quite as many. JH (talk page) 17:32, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think the first few of mine are the News Chronicle Cricket Annual; Playfair adopted the News Chronicle format when the newspaper ceased publication in about 1960. I have a couple of Playfairs from the early 1950s that are in an entirely different format. Roy Webber worked for both. Johnlp (talk) 17:37, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, IIRC our Playfair Cricket Annual article covers that. I think about the only thing that Playfair contains that can't be readily found on CricketArchive or ESPNcricinfo is the heights of the current players. JH (talk page) 18:26, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I do wonder if I'm holding out too much hope on Wisden being a useful yellow-brick to throw at the deletionists! I have noticed from the published obits on Cricinfo that certain names and schools reoccur. While completing the OU cricketers last year I did notice that Lord Marmaduke, Old Etonian, two FC matches for OU had a lengthy obit, whereas I recall a county chap (name escapes me, but had played 17 FC matches in the 1920s I think) and not a thing. Turns out he wasn't from an elite public school, so Wisden didn't bother including his obit. I will add something along the lines of what you've suggested RE how useful they can be in a wider context. I imagine Playfair might prove useful for my umpires side-project I'm due to make a start on soon in regards to the FC umpires list pre-1980. I may have to move all the players to Marmaduke, like our poor Mr Ford from Gloucestershire. StickyWicket (talk) 21:16, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
PS. I'm hoping to relaunch the cricket quiz in a few weeks, you're 23 points off the lead and there's a nice shiny new trophy for the winner at the end of the year! StickyWicket (talk) 21:16, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:04, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
