Vandalism attempts 1 Feb

User talk:82.42.83.143 hasn't been blocked. He's still blanking his Userpage everytime an editor reverts itHJ 07:17, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He has been. Blocks allow a user to edit their userpage. It has been semi-protected now. alphachimp 07:21, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He's still at it and now his attacks against us all on his Userpage and the blanking of warnings cannot be reverted. Where do we get such vandals? HJ 07:23, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nah, it's no problem. only admins can edit the page now. alphachimp 07:26, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Block of School IP

In this block, you blocked a school IP for a week. Are you going to consider a soft block, since this IP is shared? Real96 19:21, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uh, it is a soft block. I just don't write that it my summaries. alphachimp 00:23, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Admin help needed

Hi Alphachimp, could you do me a favour please? I had this left on my talk page yesterday:

Apparently, you're an admin. Could you please delete the image File:Wigged Pineapple.jpg for me? I once created it in order to use it on a website, because the image uploading websites weren't working, so I used WP. --Codell [ Talk] 03:10, 1 February 2007 (UTC).

Since I'm not an admin, I was wondering if you'd be kind enough to take on Codell's request? Thanks very much. The Rambling Man 07:57, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if the name is correct as it appears to be deleted/missing already... The Rambling Man 07:58, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All done. It was at Image:Wigged Pineapple.jpg. alphachimp 17:19, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers! The Rambling Man 17:21, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion

You deleted my efreeko page because of a G4 reason - i.e it was the same as the previous efreeko entry. It was not it addressed the issues of :

a) a lack of references b) a lack of media interest

I get the feeling that you did not bother to check the previous entry or the reasons for its deletion. Which, given the time it took me to recreate it from scratch, is very irritating.

Waveseeker 17:12, 1 February 2007 (UTC)waveseeker[reply]

I'm not sure you understand. When we delete an article per AfD, a substantially identical copy can be deleted at any time per WP:CSD G4. That's why I deleted Efreeko. If you have a problem with the deletion, feel free to take it to WP:DRV. alphachimp 17:17, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Thanks for the congrats. Sorry bout cutting you off, ive run into that a few times. By the way, im still kind of new at it so if you see me make a mistake or do something questionable, please let me know! Thanks -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:14, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User Talk Warning Removal Question

Question: If you block someone and notify them of it on their talk page, are they allowed to remove the notice of the block from their webpage? --Silverhand 17:52, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Technically, yes, but an edit can be reverted, particularly if it is vandalism or obscene (and then the talk page protected). There's a good deal of contention about the legitimacy of warning removal, but the majority opinion has typically leaned towards allowing it. alphachimp 17:58, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okie dokie, thanks for the 411! --Silverhand 18:11, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Decline autowikibrowser

Dear Alphachimp, no hard feelings for declining my request for the AWB :-) I would like to know how I can check the number of mainspace edits. I know a lot of my edits were iw's (mainly to the dutch wikipedia), often for categorization. Do they count for the "mainspace"? The total amount of edits by me is over 1000 and I'm quite experienced in using the AWB for the dutch wikipedia (for what it's worth). Kind regards, Dryke 17:51, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's worth enough to me. You're approved. As for checking on this Wikipedia, just go to this page. Cheers! alphachimp 17:56, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're too kind, I can see your good faith assumption! Dryke 17:59, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism Report

Hi, today user 169.139.224.163 vandalized the page of Intel Corporation. It appears he is pretty active with vandalizing... Having vandalized the Apple Corporation page as well. I suggest you take a look on his contribution page... If this is the wrong place to report vandalism, I'm terribly sorry. I'll watch this page for replies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/169.139.224.163 Thanks in Advance! Thunderhawk89 17:35, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alphachimpbot error

Hi, Alphachimpbot has broken a template placed on User_talk:74.117.200.71. I thought you'd better know. I haven't put it right on that page as I'm not sure how bots work, I thought it would probably just do it again. Thanks, Mallanox 22:40, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Um, no, my bot did not make a mistake. The template was deleted before the bot did the subsitution. There was a thread on WP:AN about it yesterday. Check the previous revision. alphachimp 17:39, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This individual went through some articles within the past hour and left a bit of vandalism; the Bermuda Triangle page was hit a second time, with him not only repeating his line, but defending it. I left a warning tag on his user page, but I've seen many "last chance" tags on various vandalizer pages. Carajou 02:11, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please report any future vandals to WP:AIV. I blocked him. Thanks. alphachimp 17:39, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Peter Jacobs

PJ is back: Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Jacob Peters - new IP, new account, same old edits. I noticed this request earlier this afternoon. I checked a few minutes ago and neither account has been blocked. The user's contributions seem to point overwhelmingly at a PJ sock. In short, a new user makes a bee-line for the same articles and makes the same edits as PJ. At any rate, since some of these are high profile articles (Lenin for example), it would be great if an admin or three would sit on this particular checkuser request to expedite them as they pop up. The rest of us are getting pretty adept at spotting and reporting problems. Is there anything else we could or should be doing? Rklawton 02:40, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not really. It seems the usernames have been blocked. Persistent blocked users like this cause a lot of difficulty (see CPLOT). alphachimp 16:24, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of my article on Patrick Heenan

You recently (2/2/07)deleted my article abot Patrick Heenan. Patrick Heenan was a mysterious British Army officer (of Irish descent) who was executed by two military policemen only days before the fall of Singapore. Little is publicly known of the details of his death. There isno public record ofa trial. It seems that there was hearsay evidence of his use of a little known Australian designed cypher machine, developed originally for the use of the Flying Doctor clients in outback Australia, used to allegedly contact the Japanese forces to supply military information. He is also rumoured to have been involved with the sinking of HMAS Sydney.

I think you have acted hastily, and should restore the page.

See; [1] [2] [3] [4]

and numerous other entries if you just google the name.

( warrionwacker 08:44, 3 February 2007 (UTC) )[reply]

It sounds like a lot of this is rumor. I'd suggest formally appealing the deletion on deletion review. alphachimp 16:21, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alphachimpbot support for new uw-* templates

Hi, I was wondering if you could modify your WinBot to subst: the new uw-* user talk warning templates. I've run into quite a few of the new templates that have not been substituted. -- Gogo Dodo 20:57, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good call. I added it after the last bot run. I don't think I'm winbot though :). alphachimp 16:21, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sigh. Caught copying and pasting. Thank you! -- a very embarrassed Gogo Dodo 07:07, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking

Alphachimp, I noticed the message you sent regarding the fact that I had been blocked. However, there is something you don't know. This IP address is my college's, and every computer in the building shares it. User 209.189.130.85

This guy was posted at AIV, for vandalizing after a test4- but the test4 and block was yesterday. He restarted vandalism after the block, which led to the report at AIV. When I checked it out, I didn't see any warning from today, and gave a test4. You blocked the IP. Probably a safe guess and maybe justified by the immediate revandalism, but I think you would also agree that AIV has been jammed recently with lots of people asserting "vandalism after final warning" without that actually being the case. Just wanted to point it out.[5]; keep up the good work.Kaisershatner 16:18, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. I'll try to be a little more careful with things like that. alphachimp 16:44, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. As a fellow vandalfighter, can I ask: if you indef block a user account that's vand only, do you generally also block the IP indefinitely at the same time, or just the user. Just wondering. Kaisershatner 17:27, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Autoblocks only last 24 hours. I always enable the autoblock when blocking a VoA. alphachimp 17:34, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

207.28.25.5

I unnlocked and reblocked 207.28.25.5 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) to allow for account creation. An IP should not be hard blocked for that long without good reason. Even {{schoolblock}} suggests registration. Thanks! -- Avi 16:11, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uh, I strongly disagree with your decision. First off, from a purely semantic sense, my understanding was that hard blocks prevent logged in editing. It turns out that the comment about account creation was added 5 days ago. It's just that: a suggestion. I don't agree with it. As for good reason: they were vandalizing Wikipedia. I'm not quite sure what better reason is needed. alphachimp 16:18, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Further, you destroyed the transclusion of {{Schoolblock}} onto the block page. I don't add the message to their talk page because it is transcluded into the red area of the block page. alphachimp 16:20, 8 February 2007 (UTC)`[reply]
If you disagree, by all means unblock and re-block per your original intent. I personally think that it is better to start with a less restrictive block and only increase when called for. -- Avi 16:52, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bot update

Hi, I have updated the bot to include the feature of marking IPs that match certain patters[8]. You will need to update your source before your bot works again. You also need to install the Net::Netmask module. To do this, run the program called ppm which came with activestate perl. Inside that program type install net::netmask. Thanks. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 20:24, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's another update to version 1.9.2, this update is required, as it fixes a nasty bug in the special IP handling, your bot will have shut down if it is on a lower version. Please update your source when you can. —Krellis 22:35, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Christopher Aaron Moore Jr.

I specifically put the hangon tag on the article. The article was created by the guy and he should have been able to have a few minutes to respond to the proposed speedy delete. Was it autobiographical? Yes, but we didn't give him any time to change that. MrMacMan 05:58, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's an article about a college student. There isn't a snowball's chance in hell it passes our notability guidelines. alphachimp 06:03, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

After rv on this page, I put a {{db-nn}} tag on the page, after checking WP:SPEEDY. You removed it, saying "schools = not a7" which wasn't something I'd seen before. Sorry for the inappropriate tag. When you've got a moment, is there any chance that you could point me in the direction of the page that says that, so I can make sure that I don't make similar mistakes in the future? (I must admit, I've been tempted to add {{db-nonsense}} on a couple of schools sites that I found, but did my best to clean them up, particularly Southend High School for Boys - addded this link just for proof that this is an honest request for information, not a complaint about your action.) Many thanks. Bencherlite 11:34, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Schools inherently claim notability and do not meet the criteria for speedy deletion. You are welcome to PROD them or nominate them for deletion, but they almost never meet the CSD unless they are patent nonsense. alphachimp 19:28, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1 month block

Hi. I wonder whether this IP should really be blocked for a month, taking into account the fact that it is a school IP, and the vandalism is reasonably intermittant. Although you only anon blocked them, this won't stop somebody from vandalising from the IP after the first 24 hours (as they can register), and it is forcing people to register (which we probably shouldn't do unless there is a real need). I would be inclined to reduce this to 24 hours (as that is really the duration of the block anyway). What do you think? Cheers TigerShark 21:00, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You appear to be away, so I have gone ahead and reduced the block for now. Cheers TigerShark 21:21, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it should be blocked for a month. There was quite a bit of vandalism from that IP and 1 month was the natural increment. Please wait longer than 20 minutes before reversing my decision. alphachimp 21:26, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I didn't mean to offend you, I just wasn't sure when you would be active again. What do you make of my comment that with a anon only block, the vandal could just come back after 24 hours with a user account? In this case, all we are really doing is making it compulsory for other people register (plus we are losing track of what vandalism is actually happening from this IP, making further action more difficult). TigerShark 22:59, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You didn't offend me, I was just confused about what you were saying. Just go ahead with the change. They're going to start vandalizing again though. 24 hour blocks don't do much good. alphachimp 04:36, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-Protection

Alphachimp, can you semi-protect my userpage and my header so that only established registered users can edit it, it has not been vandalized, but I am getting skittish that it will be soon, as I am seeing it left and right 24-7 (I know that there are restrictions on taking "preemptive measures", as stated in the Semi-Protection policy, but isn't that only applicable to the Article namespace? -Steptrip (talk) 02:01, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your welcome

However, I've been editing Wikipedia for some time, I just signed up for an account today because I was tired of having to keep pages in my Bookmarks as a result of switching IP's every time I go to work or Starbuck's or anywhere else.

If you have a moment, please take a look at this; between weasel words being used as "results" in CU's and people attacking the messenger, I feel very worried about being railroaded even though I have done nothing wrong. CountPointercount 16:00, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dynamite Kablammo

Hi, I am the author of the Dynamite Kablammo Wiki page and would like to know why it was deleted. We are a groundbreaking comedy group out of Los Angeles, have been nominated for several awards, and have basis to have our own Wiki article. As per a prior request, we re-coded the article in Wiki format, created links, and raised the quality of the article. While perusing the "Sketch Comedy" listings, I see other groups, such as A Week Of Kindness and Alamo Basement which have far fewer credentials and are still listed in the Wiki database. I would request to please have the Dynamite Kablammo page re-instated. Thank you.

Helperbot Userpage Template

FYI, there is a "version" parameter available in the HBC AIV helperbot userpage template that you can use to indicate what version your instance is running, helping HBC and I (as well as others) know what has and hasn't been updated. You can take a look at User:HBC AIV helperbot or User:HBC AIV helperbot3 to see it in action (and in the source). It's not automatically updated by the bot, so it is a little extra work when you upgrade, of course. Now that I think about it, that's a good thought for the next feature to add, though... :) —Krellis (Talk) 18:05, 20 February 2007 (UTC) [reply]

you are welcome to nominate them for deletion as well. I'd encourage you to take your appeal to WP:DRV. alphachimp 15:47, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your Alphachimpbot

I wondered why your bot would add the {{WikiProject Business & Economics}} template to pages that, at least to me, have nothing to do with this project? It did this to Talk:Artie Bell and Talk:1924 Isle of Man TT‎ that I watch and also to Talk:Auto-Cycle Union but that one might be marginal to include in the Business and Economics WikiProject. ww2censor 06:26, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The issue is that Category:Motorcycle stubs falls within Category:Company stubs, which the bot is tagging. I did remove most of the "TT" pages from the bot list. alphachimp 09:34, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The Category:Motorcycle stubs covers a multitude including many bios that really don't fall within your bot's template tagging activity. It is a large category and should, I think, be tagged with more discrimination that is happening otherwise individual editors will only have to remove the tags. Just more unproductive work IMHO. Your opinion would be appreciated on this. Cheers. ww2censor 14:06, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and the bot is no longer tagging those pages... alphachimp 14:32, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks ww2censor 14:46, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just reverted a few of those tags. It doesn't make sense to me to blindly add companies or stubs to the business and economics project. Can you cut that out and review those that have been done please? Dicklyon 03:39, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Your bot added the WP Business and Economics banner to the talk pages for the above articles however these are articles for 2 Grand Prix Speedway riders so this appears to be a bot error. I've reverted the edit but could you have a look to see why the bot picked these up. Thanks Jsydave 11:14, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A question

Well, you're an admin,so I guess you may know the answer...Is editing one self's talk page with recent warnings considered under the uw-delete user warning series or the uw-tpv user warning series??? 121.7.56.203 15:42, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Neither. There's nothing wrong with editing the messages on your talk page (although it is typically thought of as impolite). alphachimp 15:44, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This note is unclear in context

re: here and this note:
"AWB approval will wait until bot is approved. alphachimp 18:14, 16 February 2007 (UTC)".

Hi! I need to do some links cleanup for WP:TSP regarding a moved template... for which there is another ('interwiki') application for the old name links talk edit. Does this note imply I should also be applying for a BOT? Or is this residue from some individual comment? If the former, said notation needs be made clearer in the signup text above.
A BOT may not be the worst Idea in the world, save I know little about scripts, and those are script based, I'd thought.
In any event, a lot of the transwiki stuff I do can use some way to make simple substitution type changes, and I thought it high time to go up this learning curve. At least I've been coding C/C## for decades! Please advise. Is there a simple bot to do such template name changes? That's even less work! <G> Being basically lazy, I could go for that! Thanks! // FrankB 16:06, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The user in question was requesting approval for his AWB Bot. Although we typically grant such approvals, we don't do so until the user is formally cleared by WP:BRFA. Note that there are two types of approval for AWB: bot and user. A bot approval allows the account to edit automatically at a specified interval. In a user account, you must manually save every edit. I'm not sure what else you are asking, but you are more than welcome to request AWB access. And yes, AWB is the correct tool for simple name changes of templates. alphachimp 16:20, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK- that's clearer, I guess, though news of mixing AWB with BOTs will take some thinking. First news of that wrinkle. Thanks. My request is at 'here' above. Regards // FrankB 18:41, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Business and economics

Where do you get the idea that the business and economics project should include all businesses? You just making this up and empowering a bot to do your will, or has the project actually decided that that's what their intent is? Dicklyon 17:25, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You really ought to check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Business and Economics. They've decided to include all articles about businesses on Wikipedia. alphachimp 18:00, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I did check it out, and found nothing in the scope section or elsewhere. Where is the discussion or decision that you refer to? Dicklyon 18:34, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They wanted Category:Company stubs tagged. I'm not sure what else you need. alphachimp 19:12, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe a pointer to "they" or where they said what they "wanted"? You mean the fact that "company stubs" is listed under "needs attention"? Seems like applying your tag is not the right attention; maybe you need to actually look and see if the articles are about business or economics. I'll remove the company-stub tag from the ones I noticed so your bot won't be tempted to tag them again. Dicklyon 21:03, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do you not get it? The articles are about a business, hence within the scope of the Wikiproject. It doesn't matter whether or not they are stubs, and it's idiotic to be removing tags to "foil the bot". I'm sorry that my Wikiproject tagging is interfering with the articles that you WP:OWN. alphachimp 04:20, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I know. I typically block educational IPs for long durations. two qns

1. There is/was a template for tagging "associated IPs." Like when you block a vandal and then the same article is hit a minute later from a different IP address. Know what it is?

2. Any ideas about how to search templates, etc., to find these things? I find it difficult to locate even templates I am sure exist using the search engine. Kaisershatner 16:17, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know the specific template you're talking about, but I can point you in the direction of several template lists. Wikipedia's built in search function is useless.
