Her program of research focuses on African American caregivers and the intersection of race, gender and environment on health outcomes. For African American caregivers, environmental stress, caregiving stress, plus the burden of health disparities in African American communities create a critical, yet understudied area. She need a new narrative that considers social, cultural and environmental factors that may influence caregiver health and intervention design.^[2]

Cothran, a 2013-2015 Claire M. Fagin Fellow with the National Hartford Centers of Gerontological Nursing Excellence, focuses her research on the health of African-American dementia family caregivers. Cothran has worked in long-term care, corrections and acute care, but her clinical work with older adults in long-term care and community-based care transitions informed her research in dementia caregiving in the African-American community. Through collaborations with interdisciplinary experts across academic and community-based settings, she seeks to develop and test culturally tailored behavioral interventions for African-American dementia caregivers to promote healthy physical and mental well-being, as well as enhance quality of life.^[3][4]

Prior to her appointment at UC Davis, she was an assistant professor at Rush University College of Nursing in Chicago. Cothran earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Howard University in Washington, D.C. She completed a Master of Science in Nursing with an emphasis in Gerontological Nursing and a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing, both from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Throughout her graduate school work and later as a faculty member, she was recognized by a variety of organizations for her commitment to health equity. She was recently selected as a scholar for the Health Equity Leadership Institute in Madison, Wisconsin, and named one of the Illinois Nurses Association’s inaugural 40 under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders.^[5]
