Psychosophy (PY)

[edit]

Psychosophy (abbreviated PY) is a 24-type pseudoscientific model that was first explained through Syntax of Love by author Alexander Afanasyev. Psychosophy studies processes involving human interaction and the transmission of aspect states.[1] Afanasyev incorporated 4 psychological aspects: Will (Volition), Emotion, Logic, and Physics.[2] Simultaneously, each of these aspects form and encapsulate the core of each individuals psyche and soul. This concept is visually reflected as a 4-Letter type, with the placement determining the priorities and exemplifications of each aspect.

History

[edit]

Alexander Afanasyev (1950-2005) lived his life as a writer, scientist, inventor, philosopher, psychologist, gerontologist, teacher, and artist.[3] Graduating from the Young Art Critics Club at the A.S. Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in 1968, he worked most of his adult years as an artist.[3] In 1989, he graduated from the Gorky Literary Institution, changing his course of profession to a focus on psychoanalysis and literature. He began his literary work as a editor for the well-known magazine, "First of September". He then went on to be a teacher of psychology at the Alexander Men Orthodox Institute. After quitting his job in 1999, he lived the rest of his life fulfilling his dream as a writer until his unfortunate passing.[3] From 1991-2005, Afanasyev wrote and published Syntax of Love, in which he explains the core elements and motivations behind psychosophy as a system. This step in his career is where PY turned into something bigger, and came to fruition.

Structure

[edit]

Similar to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, created by Katharine Cook Briggs; PY types are distinguished by a 4-letter typing system. Each type consists of 4 characters and these aspects are recognized and displayed as 1234. FELV and EFLV are examples of how each psycho-type is shown.[2] There are 24 possible combinations for these aspects, and each type has a unique inner working and extrinsic appearance. The emphasis on character is heavily influenced, along with mental perceptions and physical reactions.[1] Shared traits and attributes connected to specific types are used to further expand the understanding of each aspect.

Four Aspects

[edit]

Physics (F)

[edit]

Starting the PY epiphany, the physics element explains that man consists of a body and a soul. Physical devices, like aesthetics and external appearance, are guided by the physical realm of the psyche.[1] This aspect focuses on ones body and relation to the outside world. Concepts like health, energy level, nutrition, and bodily sensations are core pillars for physics placements. This also can show how frivolously someone uses and manages financial resources. [4]

Emotion (E)

[edit]

The ethical aspect focuses on the realm of feelings, moods, heart reactions, experiences, and the "spirit". Additionally, this aspect focuses on the romantic and intimate human experiences.[1] Internal feelings like sadness, grief, anger, pleasure, joy pride, etc. are highlighted in this aspect.[5] Emotion allows individuals to influence[5] and empathize with people for a benefit. Struggles like adapting to life and fitting in are heavily accompanied by emotion.

Will/Volition (V)

[edit]

Volitional aspects have an emphasis on desire, control over others and their environment, character, personality, and inner motivations.[1] Abundant amounts of this aspect can be associated with argumentative tendencies and aggressive behavior. Self-discipline and the need for significance show the true nature of the will placement, along with immense amounts of determination and purposefulness. [6]

Logic (L)

[edit]

All things referenced to intelligence, rationality, knowledge, and reaction speed are focused in logic.[7] As a more independent aspect, the logistic realm is focused on the mind. Along with intellect and reasoning, this aspect encapsulates the ability to mentally perceive the substance of things and connect them to other topics.[1]

Function Placement

[edit]

First Function

[edit]

The first function in the personality stack shows an area of the psyche that has been mastered. This function is connected to an innate gift that nature bestowed upon us at birth.[1] There is an immense amount of certainty with the first function, and this area of life should come easy. This function is also shown as the main weapon in conflicts; being used in a ruthless way. Being the most important and reliable tool leads to overconsumption of the aspect and neglecting other important areas of the psyche.[1] This function is heavily associated to "The hammer".

First Emotion

[edit]

With emotion in the first placement, it can be assumed that they are very empathetic and understanding, but this is a false narrative.[1] People with first emotion use their ethics very selfishly, and have a hard time putting themselves into others shoes. This placement is all about feeling emotions deeply, and understanding the relations between themselves and other people. While having a hard time talking about someone else's feelings, they long for two-way discussions. [8]

First Logic

[edit]

People with logic as their primary function would rather not have prolonged intellectual conversations, especially if the end goal is to prove or be proved wrong.[9] Gaining knowledge and applying it to their life is the true desire of this placement. On the outside, they can be seen as distant and drawn off in educational settings that they are not knowledgable on. When confident, there are no opinions, only their "fact" is right. [9]

First Physics

[edit]

Individuals with a first physics placement are very aware of their own physical states, and are usually sensitive to discomfort. The feeling of having control over their environment is a huge focus for first physics; "Its mine, and I can do whatever I want with it".[10] In most cases, they do not like listening to medical professionals advice because they are confident in their own observations. Laziness can be prominent because of the need for comfort. This can also manifest in an opposite way, with an admiration to physical strength and movement.

First Will

[edit]

Having first will corresponds to the freedom of making your own decisions and being authentic. Will in the first position will never give up on themselves and never succumb to someone else's rules. Their self expression is free and natural, and it creates a strive for power and self affirmation.[11] If an individual with first will wants something, they will get it.

Second Function

[edit]

The second function in the psychosophy personality stack is similar to the first function, but it is flexible and natural.[1] This placement is referenced to a river, flowing comfortably in each crevice of the riverbed. If the first function is the gift to ourselves, the second function is the gift to others.[1] The second function shows the best parts of ourselves that we radiantly exude onto others, sometimes for an advantage. The joys of this placement are stagnate when alone, and can only truly be shown in the presence of another.

Second Emotion

[edit]

This placement is a master at evoking reactions. People with this function thrive on getting interesting and intriguing reactions from others. They are good at getting people to open themselves up, usually drawing frankness out of others.[12] 'The Friend-zone" is a very prominent concept in their life: being flirty, getting a friends hopes up, and then rejecting them when they ask the dreaded question. They have a hard time settling themselves into an intrinsic state of sorrow and reflection. The only times they get emotional is at the expense of another. [12]

Second Logic

[edit]

Second Logic as a function is sometimes associated with the instigator, creating squabbles in intellectual conversations.[12] Unlike the first logic, second logic individuals love interesting and argumentative conversations. In these intellectual moments, they resent stubborn people who are not open to experience introspective and joyful thinking. It is important to note that second logic individuals will not be offended by paradoxical thinking in intense and intellectual conversations. [12][1]

Second Physics

[edit]

These people live by movement[12] and take in the beauty of life at face value. These people usually enjoy botanical gardens and museums because they display pure beauty in front of the eyes of the perceiver. They tend to have a very idealistic perception of life,[1] and beauty manifests naturally in their environment. Additionally, these individuals are also great lovers because of their ability to see the beauty in everything around them; appreciating every aspect of a relationship.[1]

Second Will

[edit]

This placement almost provokes people to whine and bicker, and they become touched by it.[12] There is a subconscious desire to calm down angry people, and find solutions to their problems. In a literal sense, they make other peoples "will" tangible, shape it to perfection, and then share it with the world. People with second will are comfortable in leadership positions, and are equally happy in a subordinate position.[1]

Third Function

[edit]

Similar to the second function, the third function is focused on others. What differentiates the two is that the third function is focused on deep-rooted issues and negative traits. This is a function that is heavily considered vulnerable and underdeveloped. In the PY stack, this function is the most intense and should not be taken lightly. The most infuriating part of this function is the untapped potential that stays stagnant for a long time without assistance. Situations that heavily involve this function leave deep scars and intense trauma. With time, this function can be improved and understood to a deeper extent; when not handled, this function acts as an "Achilles Heel" for the majority of people's lives.

Third Emotion

[edit]

This is a very intense function because of the heavy wound of emotional stability. At face value, they seem distant in the emotional realm. They tend to stray away from deep emotional conversations because of their innate fear of reacting emotionally. Someone with third emotion secretly longs for deep emotional connection, but this manifests after a very long time. Juxtaposed to this, starting a conversation along the lines of "How do you feel about me?" will generally spark a deep and conventional conversation.[13]

Third Logic

[edit]

Third logic extrinsically presents themselves as naive and distrustful.[14] While sole information without a reliable source is not enough for them, they become grateful when something is explained to them. Unlike Third emotion, individuals with this function placement love abstract and unconventional conversations; politics, religion, and relationships in specific.[14] An aggressive aspect of these individuals consists of losing confidence in an argument. These people become ruthless and very irritable in arguments. The main contributor for this outcome is that they start to doubt their own knowledge.

Third Physics

[edit]

People with third physics are unhealthily sensitive and concerned with their material condition.[15] Meaningless tasks of cleanliness arise from this concept; this creates problems that do not need to be solved. Individuals with this placement have an odd relationship with physical touch. While not being opposed to it, they are usually overly cautious in this realm. People with third physics tend to have heightened senses, which impact their lives greatly.[1] This can potentially lead to these people being successful as a food critic.[1]

Third Will

[edit]

Third will is most intense aspect in the third position by far. This is because their problems cover all aspects of their life, and affect every function.[16] When getting to know people with this aspect, their complexities shine externally. Because of this, they can seem very negative and tend to complain; "I'm a loser, a failure, I'll never achieve anything in life".[16] If situations become critical for these people, they explode and make choices that they will regret in the long run. There is a constant aspiration to understand the complexities of the hierarchy and improving their status, which leads to self-critical tendencies.[1]

Fourth Function

[edit]

As the last function in the PY stack, this realm has the least importance in life. While this does not mean this function is weak and unproductive, this is an area of life that we don't particularly focus on. This function very commonly subordinates itself into the higher patriarchy, and simultaneously loses individuality in this area.[1] The phrase "Go with the flow" is a perfect metaphor for the base of the fourth function.

Fourth Emotion

[edit]

These individuals are usually calm in critical situations and actively focus on calming down others. Being stress-free is a natural inhabitance to these people, and they see every situation at face value. In these situations especially, they seem nonchalant and emotionally distant. This becomes an issue whenever a partner is expecting an emotional reaction from an event, and these individuals are not able to give them one.[17] They reflect an environment that others create, similarly to first emotion. The difference is that these expressions are a visual representation of their own inner state.

Fourth Logic

[edit]

People with fourth logic are simply too lazy to think.[17] They listen to authority and never question their stance, and simultaneously take on the same values of them. In dire situations, these people end up believing anything.[17] Although these people are not fools, they do not take much convincing with logical topics. In everyday situations, they can be perceived as normal citizens who are not able to form their own opinions. Do not be foolish and underestimate them, they still have the resources to fight back.

Fourth Physics

[edit]

The physics aspect in the fourth placement is shown by a lack of self-care and uncleanliness. However, this concept is a astronomically more complex than that. Because of their "Log" like nature, they can be physically manipulated without knowing. They can live in messiness or cleanliness.[17] This is because they simply do not care about the physical environment around them. Stereotypically, people with fourth physics can go long periods of time without showering and feel satisfied. Individuals who have depression or other various disorders usually self-type into this placement; keep in mind that the fourth function is what humans naturally tend to unconsciously forget about.

Fourth Will

[edit]

Having will in the fourth placement can be obvious externally. These people stray as far away as they can from leadership positions, waiting for decisions to be made by others around them.[17] While showing up as nice and easy going, relaxation is the ultimate goal. They naturally effect others in a way that allows them to open up and be themselves, and this is something that these people cherish. Because these people do not like to bear responsibility and strain themselves, this can lead to being apprehensive about sticking up for a friend.

Self-typing

[edit]

As a system, PY is very complex and has many factors. Simple "personality tests" will not be affective within typing oneself. The concept of personality tests have gotten very popular in recent times, and they can work for some systems, but having self-awareness is a necessity to correctly typing oneself or others in psychosophy. A base to start self-typing is becoming familiar with each aspect, and see how it manifests in daily life. For example, a common way to pinpoint the first function is to locate the first reaction to any specific event. By knowing your own type, it helps start the journey of self discovery and also gives insight on ones positive traits and also negative traits that can be worked on. It is normal to not be sure of what type is the best fit, the entire system of psychosophy is a tool to better yourself and that comes with a heightened self-awareness.
