RUAG Aviation is the aviation division of the international Switzerland-based company RUAG Group. It has international operations based in Oberpfaffenhofen (Germany), Brazil, Malaysia and Australia. Major sites in Switzerland include Emmen Air Base, Dübendorf Air Base, Alpnach Air Base, Buochs Airport, Interlaken Airport, Lodrino Air Base and St. Gallen–Altenrhein Airport.


History

RUAG Aviation has been formed through the acquisition of several companies.

The Swiss company SF Schweizerische Unternehmung für Flugzeuge und Systeme AG (formerly Eidgenössisches Flugzeugwerk) became RUAG Aviation on 27 May 1998.

After named SF Swiss company for aircraft and systems AG to RUAG. This was the second change of the name, until a few years after World War Two It was named Eidgenössisches Flugzeug Werk (EFW).

In 2003 RUAG took over the civil and military service area at Oberpfaffenhofen, of the former Dornier Luftfahrt GmbH, renaming it RUAG Aerospace Services. It services the Bell UH-1D helicopters of the Bundeswehr and since 2009 has undertaken final assembly of the twin-engine turboprop Do 228NG light transport aeroplane.

In Australia, RUAG has acquired Rosebank Engineering and absorbed it into the Aviation division.

Aircraft structural engineering and for specialized machining, forming, surface, assembly and environmental technology.

RUAG develops, manufactures and integrates predominantly structural assemblies and precision components using the latest technologies in the areas of composite, sheet metal and metal machining and assembly for the aerospace industry as well as for the machinery industry. Main customers are the large aircraft manufacturer Airbus, Boeing.

Maintenance and modernisation of the Swiss Air Force jet aircraft and helicopters in any aspect is one of the main work of RUAG. This also includes work on engines, avionics and military systems.

In Alpnach Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma/ Cougar Eurocopter EC635 and Eurocopter EC135 are maintained, also various domestic and foreign users helicopters. RUAG had built the Cougar and EC635 for the Swiss Air Force in licence at Alpnach Air Base. At Militärflugplatz Emmen RUAG performs maintenance work on the drones ADS-95, Northrop F-5 Tiger II and McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet of the Swiss Air Force. 32 of the 34 F/A-18 of the Swiss Air Force were built by RUAG. The F-5 Tiger were assembled and all ADS-95 were built by RUAG. At Dübendorf Air Base RUAG maintenance the FLORAKO airspace control system of the Swiss Air Force.

In the category "Research", which maintains several wind tunnels, new components are developed and tested. The STOL-capable aircraft Do 228NG was developed from the Dornier Do 228 and is marketed worldwide.

Licensed manufacture and maintenance of missiles includes:

  • 65 "Bantam" Anti-armour ground to ground guided missile.
  • M47 Dragon anti-armour ground to ground guided missile, including various modifications.
  • BGM-71 TOW "Tow 2" anti-armour ground to ground guided missile.
