Tai'an (Chinese: 泰安; pinyin: Tài'ān) is a prefecture-level city in western Shandong province. Centered around Mount Tai, the city borders the provincial capital of Jinan to the north, Laiwu to the northeast, Zibo to the east, Linyi to the southeast, Liaocheng to the extreme west and Jining to the south. To the west, Tai'an is separated from the province of Henan by the Yellow River.

Its population was 5,494,200 as of the 2010 census, of whom 1,594,877 lived in the built up area made of 2 urban districts (Xintai and Feicheng).[1]

The prefecture-level city of Tai'an administers six county-level divisions, including two districts, two county-level cities and two counties.[2]

History

  • During the Tianhui Emperor's rule over China, he established a military for the city of Tai'an, and its name has prevailed ever since then.
  • During the Emperor Dading of the Jin Dynasty, Tai'an became a prefecture-level city.
  • In 1950, Tai'an District Specialist Office was established.
  • In 1967, Tai'an Revolutionary Committee took place of the Office.
  • In 1978, the Tai'an Revolutionary Committee was replaced by the Tai'an Region Administrative Office.
  • In 1985, Tai'an District became a city in new China.[4]

Geography and climate

Tai'an has a continental half-moist temperate monsoon climate. Its annual average temperature is 13℃. The highest temperature is in July, the average temperature is 26.4℃.The lowest temperature is in January, the average temperature is -2.6℃. The annual average precipitation of Tai'an is 697mm. The Mount Tai area has a mountain climate with an annual average precipitation of 1106mm. The temperature at the top of the mountain is 7～8℃ lower than at the temperature at its foot.[5]

Education

Shandong Agricultural University (SDAU) was first founded in Jinan in 1906 but moved to Taian later on in 1958. With its picturesque scenery and evergreen plants, the campus is well recognized for its elegant environment. SDAU has received excellent academic evaluations from the university in National Evaluation of Undergraduate Teaching in China. Today, SDAU is a multi-disciplinary university that covers agriculture, science, enginee-ring, management, economics, humanities, law, medicine and education.[6]

Shandong University of Science and Technology (SDUST) is an outstanding university in Shandong Province with several distinguished features, offering multidisciplinary education in engineering, sciences, management, literature, law, economics and education. It gives prominence to engineering and is noted for mining technology.[7]

Taishan Medical University used to be known as the Loude Branch of Shandong Medical University. In 1974, it became an independent school upon the approval of the State Council and Shandong Provincial Government. In 1980, the college moved from Loude to Taian and its name was then changed in 1981 to Taishan Medical University. In 1998 it passed the Undergraduate Teaching Standard Evaluation from the State Ministry of Education. With the approval of the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council, the university became authorized to grant general master degrees in 1998 and continuous education master degrees in 2004. The university covers an area of 200 hectares with a construction area of 670,000 square meter. There are sufficient resources in which students have access to 1,280,000 books, 544,800 e-books, 1417 Chinese and English periodicals, and 12 Chinese and English article databases.[8]

Taishan University is a full-time undergraduate institution approved by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It used to be the Tai'an Government Normal College established in 1905. The University is located at the foot of Mount Taishan, the World Natural and Cultural Heritage Site, Global Geo-park and the most famous mountain in China. The university has a serene and elegant campus, exuberant flowers and trees, carpetted with green grass and stunning scenery. It is well served by a convenient transportation network with the No.104 national road crossing here and connecting the golden tourist route of the "One Mountain (Mount Tai)", the "One Water (Spring City of Jinan)" and "One Sage (Confucius)".[9]

Shandong Vocational College of Clothing (SVCC), approved by Shandong Provincial Government and recorded by the State Ministry of Education, is the exclusive full-time higher education institution of clothing in Shandong Province.[10]

Transportation

Tai'an serves as the communication hub in East China with highways and railways extending in all directions. The Beijing-Shanghai Railway extends across the city. The Beijing-Fuzhou Expressway and Beijing-Shanghai Expressway meet in Tai'an. As one of the 21 stations of the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway, Mount Taishan Station has been confirmed to be set up in Tai'an, and is currently under construction. With the well-developed transportation system, it is only several hours from the important ports such as Qingdao, Rizhao, Lianyungang; 6 hours from the important domestic cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Nanjing, Zhengzhou by expressway; and 1 hour from Seoul of S.Korea and 2 hours from Tokyo of Japan by air.　[11]

Dai temple is located at the south foot of Mount Taishan in the center of Tai’an City. It is also known as the Dongyue (mountain in the east) Temple, Taiyue(supreme mountain) Temple, Daiyue(revered mountain) Temple, and Tai Temple. Dai Temple is the main place to hold worship ceremonies.[12]

The section from South Heavenly Gate to Summit of Mount Taishan is called Dai Ding (the top of Mount Taishan) with an area of 0.6 square kilometers.[13]
