Did You Know Aug 20 2011

[edit]

It is unfortunate that the Did You Know for 20 August picked on the one glaringly untrue claim in the article. "attracted a clientele that included Christine Keeler, Mandy Rice-Davies" when it is evidently an anachronism. As the article states - the Mangrove opened in 1968. The Profumo scandal was in 1963. The first ref Jasper Lee is just plain confused, and should not be regarded as reliable. The second Margaret Busby quotes Crichlow as saying "Christine Keeler, who used to call me "Dad", John Profumo – they all came to the club." In fact, the establishment referred to is evidently the earlier "Rio" on Westbourne Park Road. Note further, no mention of Rice-Davies by Crichlow. Although he suggests it I would certainly look for a more reliable source before placing Profumo in the Rio, for sure. The gist of the story is that Keeler was running a double, if not triple life, only one of which was hanging out with West Indians. So, while indeed Keeler patronized the Rio and was friends with Crichlow, and thus very likely visited the Mangrove later, the article is misleading. Someone has moved the article, but not the talk page, and insodoing has messed up the DYK stats. I'm going to have to use the tools to delete this page, and merge them back. If anyone objects in terms of what it should be called, it can always be undone and we can hold an RM poll. SlimVirgin TALK|CONTRIBS 07:05, 21 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, done, and no merge was needed. The DYK stats now point to the right title. SlimVirgin TALK|CONTRIBS 07:07, 21 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is conceivable that the article should be merged with Frank Crichlow, once things settle down. Wwwhatsup (talk) 08:15, 21 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
