Sorbian language speaking in Serbin

[edit]

Anyone interested in knowing this:

A Texas Highways magazine in 1985 was able to cite one individual that was able to speak the language at least in part.

The annual Wendish Festival every September usually culls at least a few words or sentences in Upper Sorbian, I believe part or all of the church service at the September 27th 2009 Wendish Festival was spoken in Upper Sorbian.

The sign in front of the Texas Wendish Heritage Museum reads "Witajcže K'nam" meaning Welcome.Kargin (talk) 06:44, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I was at the Wendish festival several years ago (maybe 2001 or 2002). The church service was in German, but there was one prayer spoken by one person in Upper Sorbian. There was a woman from Lusatia demonstrating Easter egg dyeing, but she spoke only German (and English), no Sorbian. I remember the sign too, but of course a sign is no indication of people's ability to speak a language. (Just go to Dublin and compare the amount of Irish you see written on signs with the number of people able to carry on a conversation in the language!) +Angr 07:09, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you're interested, I just found the church service from this past Wendish Fest online: http://www.stpaulserbin.org/media/videos/SerbinChurch_09_27_2009/Default.html I'm unable to view it presently but will do so later at home. I agree with you on the subject of the sign vs. speakers. Efforts are underway to bring back the Bird's Wedding this January in the local parochial school which should also mean teaching of a few words in Upper Sorbian. It's a start, right?Kargin (talk) 07:22, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
