Early compositions for orchestra by American women
[edit]At this writing the article says her Dramatic Overture (1893) was the first composition by a woman composer to be performed by a "major American symphony orchestra." This was performed before Amy Beach's Gaelic Symphony (1896). But Beach's Grand Mass in E-flat major for chorus and orchestra was premiered in 1892 by the Handel and Haydn Society. It may be questionable whether the Society is (or was at the time) a "major American symphony orchestra" but the issue might merit a parenthetical note. Marlindale (talk) 18:48, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
I rewrote the Lead to mention all three pieces with their premiere years and orchestras. The BSO was founded in 1881. In 1853 H+H had presented the Boston premiere of Beethoven's 9th symphony. That could suggest a "major" status at least before 1881. In the 1890's? Maybe we don't need to decide that. Marlindale (talk) 19:43, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
