Race

The first sentence doesn't seem to be pertinent: "Lottie H. Shackelford is an African-American politician." She is not a politician for African Americans, she is a politician who happens to be African American. It is already noted later some of the "firsts" she accomplished, so it doesn't seem necessary to me to introduce her in this way. Jesse Jackson's bio has him as an activist, not an African American activist, and certainly most politicans do not start off with "is a Caucasian politician". My $0.02.
