City served (August 2024)

[edit]

@Spworld2: According to Template:Infobox airport, the 'city-served' parameter is for the major city to which the airport is associated, in this case Calicut / Kozhikode.
"Kozhikode Airport is located in Malappuram district, this airport is now within the Malappuram Metro City limits, and the people here travel mostly by Kozhikode International Airport" are not valid arguments, since people from nearby states/districts/cities would often travel from a particular airport if it is closer. The reason I didn't revert was because you said the airport is within the Malappuram Metro City limits, though there is no mention of Kozhikode being part of it in Malappuram article. We need to establish that first using WP:RS. @Fylindfotberserk: Agree. The city-served should be the major city the airport serves. Another example would be Kempegowda International Airport. It is located on the outskirts of Devanahalli town, other towns like Chikkaballapura, Rajanukunte, Gauri Bidanur, Doddaballapura are all in close proximity and people residing in these towns do use BLR airport. But that does not mean city-served is all these towns/cities, for BLR it is Bangalore. Similarly, for CCJ, it is Kozhikode alone.  LeoFrank  Talk 17:19, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Malappuram and Wayanad district were part of Kozhikode district earlier. Malappuram became a separate district in 1969 and Wayanad in 1980 .Calicut Airport was in the cards for a very long time and the site identified. The airport was initially planned at Chelari where there was an exiting airstrip. The airport was finally sanctioned, built and commissioned at Karippur (Kondotty ). Both these places were part of Kozhikode district. The project was delayed due to the red tapism and also due to the political interference. Some even blame the tourist bus mafia which would suffer a lot especially on the Calicut - Mumbai and Malappuram- Mumbai sector. Hence the name Kozhikode international airport thought situated at Malappuram. Incidentally its also know as Karippur Airport locally referred (Kondoty Airport and Malappuram Airport).
Kozhikode Airport is situated at Karipur, airport was built 1988 in the Malappuram district of the South Malabar area of Kerala. Calicut Airport serves the people of the Malabar region-Malappuram, Kozhikkode this airport serves the people of Malappuram district and Kozhikode district.
People of Malappuram district mostly work in Gulf countrie [1] [2] and they depend on this airport [3] Spworld2 (talk) 13:13, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
