Title Capitalization

[edit]

We may want to consider moving the title to "JPEGMafia," however inelegant. I know the MoS specifies (somewhere—I can't locate it presently) that titles should only be all caps when referring to an acronym (see the countless attempts to move MF Doom to "MF DOOM"). JPEGMAFIA is more complicated, admittedly, as the JPEG portion is an acronym. Is it actually in accordance with the MoS to fully capitalize the non-acronym portion of a name formed from an original acronym? anthologetes (talkcontribs) 17:36, 17 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I’ve finished a German-language article about him and decided to capitalize the title. That’s how nearly all websites type it. --Clemens Stockner (Talk) 22:57, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The JPEG part of his name isn't an acronym. It's Jay-Peg-Mafia not Joint Photographic Experts Group-Mafia, so if we wanna be "correct" his name would be spelled as "Jpegmafia" Crizpie (talk) 23:54, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, in my opinion it should either be Jpegmafia or JPEGMAFIA. No websites from what I've seen spell it as JPEGMafia, and it doesn't really make much sense either way. -Nicenice23 (talk) 23:36, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Peggy even has a track "ALL CAPS NO SPACES", of course it should be all caps, and it doesn't matter how do we think, because the most important here is an artist's idea TheDanikBu (talk) 09:10, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It does look odd not being all caps but there is precedent for ignoring artists name stylization. Look at the band fun. CanningIO (talk) 02:26, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Splitting proposal

[edit]

I've received an AFC draft submission to split the discography from this page. Is this worth doing? @Ss112: who created the redirect back in May 2019. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 20:23, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@AngusWOOF: I agree with your decline—I think if the article were to have more information, like chart positions, then it might be worth a split. But not in its current form. Ss112 22:38, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ss112, I only see one chart position, which is why Jpegmafia even has a page in the first place. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 22:40, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Master's in Journalism

@Cocoa butter crisp: why do you keep removing that he has a master's in journalism? The information is accurate, relevant, and cited. anthologetes (talkcontribs) 22:40, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

JpegmafiaJPEGMafia – The current title of this article is a made up name, since his name is never given as Jpegmafia, and Jpeg is like JPEG. What is better, JPEGMafia or JPEGMAFIA? I think JPEGMafia at least adhered to MOS:CAMELCASE, but also, it's a made up form too. JPEGMAFIA is what he is called in reliable sources, but there's no encyclopedia reason to capitalize MAFIA. But I prefer either over Jpegmafia. --Quiz shows 22:27, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pinging WT:MOSCAPS AngusWOOF (barksniff) 15:47, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Capital letters#Trademarks is clear and unambiguous on this. "For trademarks, editors should choose among styles already in common use (not invent new ones) and, among those, use the style that most closely resembles standard English text formatting and capitalization rules." (bold mine). Since it is clear that the current capitalization both a) resembles standard English text formatting and capitalization rules and b) is in common use, we should keep it as it. I will note that the MOS says in common use, NOT most common use, since this one is common enough and follows standard capitalization rules, we should keep it. --Jayron32 16:00, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per Jayron and the Jpegmafia Facebook page. Dicklyon (talk) 02:02, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    Bogus WP:OFFICIALNAME argument. The entire reason MOS:TM exists is to prevent engaging in case-by-case unusual stylization to ape someone's trademark/logo.  — AReaderOutThatawayt/c 05:54, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per MOS:TM, MOS:ABBR, and MOS:CAMEL. JPEG is an initialism. Mafia is not. The name as a whole is a run-together two-word trademark, which would be JPEG Mafia if the space had not been removed. Ergo, JPEGMafia. WP simply does not care at all what the "official" logo rendering is (WP:OFFICIALNAME), and RS usage is all over the map (the music press most often apes the trademark, but they do that with everyone, and it is never, ever a rationale on WP to ape them in turn). The only exceptional cases we permit are ones were RS, of all kinds, are almost totally in agreement on a potentially odd-seeming, stylized rendering (thus Deadmau5 but not Ke$ha, and this is obviously a Ke$ha case; see also Client (band) and a zillion other examples).  — AReaderOutThatawayt/c 05:54, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Jayron32, are you okay with this interpretation of the MOS? AngusWOOF (barksniff) 14:03, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Why did you single me out for my opinion? My interpretation does not overrule anyone else's... --Jayron32 14:50, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

AReaderOutThataway, hold on, you're not supposed to move the article until the discussion has closed and there is consensus. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 14:01, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I didn't realize there was an actual RM open, and this thread here wasn't generating any comment. I've asked WP:RMTR to revert my move.  — AReaderOutThatawayt/c 18:12, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Instagram objection to title

[edit]

The artist has since posted an Instagram that disagrees with the newly formatted title, prompting multiple editors to want to change this back to all-caps. Should the title fomat be revisited, or does it even matter? AngusWOOF (barksniff) 21:29, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Artist preference should not drive Wikipedia formatting. That is why we list the stylized spelling in the lead paragraph, so that users who want to know how to stylize the spelling in their personal usages know how it is stylized. Examples of bands that prefer all caps that on Wikipedia we follow the rules are Gwar, stylized as GWAR, and Awolnation, stylized in all caps show that the editors try to use an even hand when avoiding including band or artist stylization preferences for article titles. I suggest that we follow the rules. Mburrell (talk) 04:41, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I will respect these rules, but in the case that peggy is deemed notable enough to have a part on his wikipedia explaining the reason behind his name, I think it should be included that peggy himself is vocally opposed to stylization of "JPEGMAFIA" any other way than "ALL CAPS NO SPACES", might not be encyclopedic but I think It's notable. Is The Rockwood Escape Plan a stage name?

[edit]

Is "The Rockwood Escape Plan" a stage name, or just the name of his mixtape?

Please note that Rate Your Music is not a reliable source per WP:RSP AngusWOOF (barksniff) 00:47, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Crizpie: please discuss here before doing any further editing on the main page. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 01:05, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If we are not counting the RYM as a reliable source, we shouldn't count the SoundCloud either because it is not his official SoundCloud. The most reliable source we have is his Bandcamp which he runs. On "JOECHILLWORLD" and "THE ROCKWOOD ESCAPE PLAN" the artist name on the page is Devon Hendryx "The Rockwood Escape Plan" meaning he went under the alias. Crizpie (talk) 01:22, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Other sources:
This implies he has used the name Devon Hendryx "The Rockwood Escape Plan" but it's not clear if he's ever used just The Rockwood Escape Plan which is the name of his mixtape. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 01:36, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
So should we put Devon Hendryx "The Rockwood Escape Plan" instead of just The Rockwood Escape Plan Crizpie (talk) 03:54, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you go on wayback machine, you can find that he once used exclusively "The Rockwood Escape Plan" as his name, then later changing it to Devon Hendryx "The Rockwood Escape Plan". -Nicenice23 (talk) 15:48, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nicenice23, Wayback on which article? AngusWOOF (barksniff) 15:53, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
On his bandcamp, here -Nicenice23 (talk) 16:05, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nicenice23, that one still shows him as Devon Hendryx "The Rockwood Escape Plan" And it's bandcamp. Hmm, try these: http://web.archive.org/web/20120209090454/http://devonhendryx.com/ has a "Vote for me" which leads to http://web.archive.org/web/20120116152050/http://ilspins.com/ils-cyphers-round-one-prod-hanz/ where he's listed exclusively as The Rockwood Escape Plan. Probably a temporary name as he later just uses Devon Hendryx for his previous work prior to JPEGMAFIA (blog example:https://ihrtn.net/from-the-root-to-the-fruit-jpegmafia%E2%80%8F/ ) You could try with the more reliable sources listed but I would work that name into the biography section first before adding it to the infobox. Dreamcast Summer Songs release date is wrong

[edit]

"Generation Y" is JPEGMAFIA's first mixtape. "Dreamcast Summer Songs" was originally titled "Since I Left You II" and released 10 February 2011. Later, he deleted the release and decided to re-release the mixtape as "Dreamcast Summer Songs".[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.55.146.15 (talk) 07:38, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
