Year of birth

[edit]

The obituary in The Times gives his date of birth not as 1912 (stated in the article) as 1920: link. The year 1920 is also given on page 99 of the Encyclopaedia of Caribbean Literature by D. H. Figueredo (Greenwood Press, 2006), and in this article from 2005. An eight year gap is quite significant - is there an explanation and a definitive source? Most other major newspaper obits said 1912, and a quick check of primary sources on Ancestry.com also indicates that Braithwaite wrote 1912 on immigration/naturalization documents. Nobody seems to have explained where the alternative date of "1920" came from, but he wouldn't be the first celebrity to shave a few years off his true age for vanity reasons.
