Camp

Layout

different name in infobox

I've never seen an infobox name be different than the article name. He has two names but shouldn't they be common in the article? Considering his twitter is @DonaldGlover and his website address is iamdonald.com, it seems like he prefers that as his name. Has this been discussed before? МандичкаYO 😜 18:13, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

Birthplace

Indented line

I think this is now fixed (partially). He was born in California on Edwards Air Force Base, can someone add this to the "Early life and education" section.. page is locked from editing. [1]

actually it says he was born "in" Edwards AFB -- what does that mean? makes it sound like there is a civilian township surrounding the base and he was born THERE, in the base's shadow. if he was actually born ON the base (i do not know), pls change to "on".
neither of his parents are listed as military, btw. was his father a postal worker ON BASE or what? if not, it sounds even more likely he was born NEXT to the base. i don't think random civilians stroll onto bases to use their hospital facilities. 209.172.25.16 (talk) 07:55, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

Partner’s name

This is the closest thing I’ve found to a source about her name being Michelle White without participating in original research. Age incorrect by one year

At the time of writing this, his birth date is 19830925 and the current date is 20190928, which makes his age 36, but his age is showing as 35. I thought it may be a caching issue but I've now tried in several browsers (IE, Vivaldi, FF, FF Dev Ed, Waterfox), so I'm fairly certain it's an issue with the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.4.190.184 (talk) 22:36, 28 September 2019 (UTC)

I'm not really familiar with Glover, so I'm diving in cold with this article! Some of these points might be my nitpicking and personal style, so feel free to oppose certain points if you have a strong opinion. I hope you find them constructive. Thanks :)

Lead section

  • "Glover won various accolades, including.." - Could this be shortened to not mention each category of award? For instance, this might be enough, "His accolades include two Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards". The categories he won could be mentioned later.
  • "The Lazarus Effect, Magic Mike XXL" - They're missing their year of release. What about mentioning film genres here? He's done a comedy, sci-fi, horror, superhero film. That might be useful to readers.
  • First and second paragraphs both begin with "After". For his Grammy Awards, could they be mentioned in the same sentence? eg. "Grammy Award winning song and video, "This Is America".

  • "Glover was contacted" - How about "Glover caught the attention of David Miner, after he had sent writing samples to him.."?
  • "Invited him" - hired him?
  • What was the film Mystery Team about and how well did it perform? eg. He starred as a clueless detective.. The film did not perform well in the box office."
  • "became known to a wider audience" - Did he? I think we could jump straight into "Glover played Troy Barnes, a former high school star quarterback in the NBC sitcom Community" [...] He left the show after five seasons.."
  • "pursue his rap career as Childish Gambino" - Should you mention that's his stage name he adopted/generated? I know it's mentioned in the next paragraph, so perhaps omit the stage name from here.
  • "Glover's musical stage name" - Could we also mention that this was the start of his musical career?
  • "in 2010 and followed that July by his fifth mixtape" - This might need rewording.
  • "then-upcoming" - I don't think we need to mention it was then-upcoming.
  • "The campaign to see how far" - Could this be reworded to be more formal? eg. "The campaign sparked a viral response on Twitter.."

Career 2011-14

  • "While doing musical side projects while working on.." - Do we need to mention that? We could just write: "Glover approached Ludwig Göransson, a composer he previously worked with on the series Community".
  • "In 2013, Glover signed on to create a music-themed show" - What does it mean by "signed on"? He was the creator of the series. Some background info in to how he came up with Atlanta might be interesting. It's about two cousins in the rap scene, right? (I know it's mentioned later, but might need to bring it up).
For chronological reasons (a lot of details of the show didn’t come out until years later) I believe the background aspect should be in the 2015-2017 section while the general parts are in that section. Trillfendi (talk) 18:32, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
  • "executive produce" - Personally, I don't like that term used as a verb. It sounds better as "serve as an executive producer".
  • "To promote the album, the short film Clapping for the Wrong Reasons, written by and starring Glover" - This might sound better if rephrased: "To promote the album, Glover wrote a short film Clapping for the Wrong Reasons which stars himself and.."
  • "Heartbeat" was certified Gold first in July 2014, then two years later in February 2016, Because the Internet was certified Gold. Might want to put this in order.
  • Do you think a little more info on the films is useful? Was he in a supporting role, who's the director, commercial performance?
As far as I know, Clapping was a short film released on YouTube. The director was Hiro Murai. The To-Do List doesn’t make much mention of his role so it probably was just a cameo. Trillfendi (talk) 18:32, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
  • "FX ordered the pilot" - Ok, so now we're going back to Atlanta. I assume between 2013-15, FX were developing the show. Perhaps we could signal this by writing: "After two years in the works, FX eventually premiered the first episode of Atlanta.."
According to Glover, it took about 3 years to develop the show which he says is typical. But because of his music career people thought it was delayed or something. So I will expound on that. Trillfendi (talk) 18:32, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
  • "Glover writes, occasionally directs, executive produces, and stars.." - This might sound better as: "Glover stars as Earnest "Earn" Marks [...] He also serves as director, executive producer and writer." I think it's a bit of a mouthful to have it all in one sentence.

Career 2018-

  • "released a single while performing dual hosting and musical duty on Saturday Night Live" - Do you mean he performed his new single, while serving as host and musical guest on SNL? Might need rephrasing.
  • "Glover's performance was widely praised" - Says who? It was only prasied by Stephanie Zacharek in that source.
For this part I added two other examples of reviews where they opine he was the best part of the film. Personally I haven't seen it so I wouldn't know for myself. Trillfendi (talk) 23:12, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
  • "Glover had been filming a secret project.." - Well, it's not a secret anymore and the details aren't unknown. Maybe this should be updated/removed, since one of the next paragraphs states that Guava Island was released on Amazon. What sort of film is it?
  • "in partnership with app PHAROS AR" - I'm pretty sure Google partnered with Glover, to make the app. What does the app do?
  • "expecting a second son" - They're not expecting anymore. We should update to the current situation, eg. "He and his partner.. have two sons".

Summary

Some of the language could be tightened to be more encyclopaedic and formal (which I can help with), for instance:

  • "shutting down media speculation" - ending media speculation
  • "talks about what is wrong with the music industry and why he wants to quit music." - the lyrics include [...], a reflection of his negative feelings toward the music industry"
  • "Time named Glover to its annual "100 Most Influential People in the World." - Glover was listed as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World" by Time magazine

Also, the transition between paragraphs might need to be clearer. Glover is obviously doing a film, then releasing music, then a film again etc. I think some paragraphs should explicitly state what he worked on next, eg. "Glover'next project was a film..", "He returns to music in 2016 with live performances..", "After this album, he worked on a film.."

Hey @Trillfendi: Once again, I've made some minor tweaks to the article. Before I pass this as a GA, please fix/clarify these points:

  • When did Glover become a member of Derrick Comedy? The lead section states he was in it while at NYU. But in the 2006 career section, it states "Glover also became a member of the sketch comedy group Derrick Comedy". I got a little confused.

  • "certified platinum accumulating 1,000,000 in album-equivalent units" - Does that mean the album sold one million units?
A few years ago RIAA changed the definition of platinum to include streaming (for better or worse), so that does need clarification. Basically 1,500 streams now equal one album sale. The source itself of the RIAA website doesn’t detail how it got there it just says 1 million certified units, therefore I will put that. Seems he sold both vinyls and digitals.   • "the second to last show that we'll be doing before retiring the Childish Gambino pseudonym" - Is he retiring from music completely - do you know?
He hasn’t been very unambiguous about it, but a few months ago in a Jimmy Kimmel interview he said he still sees himself making music in the future because he enjoys it. So I think the pseudonym is the thing he is retiring... one of these days. Trillfendi (talk) 23:11, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

'Cancel' comments

The following text which I added On May 11, 2021 Glover criticised cancel culture on Twitter, particularly in regards to the entertainment industry saying "We're getting boring stuff and not even experimental mistakes because people are afraid of getting cancelled".[1][2][3] was removed twice by the IP user 2603:8001:6703:9792:54DA:D2C0:5795:21ED for being "False information. Glover did not criticize “cancel culture” - he criticized the cancelling of television programming" despite the fact the RSs say he did. Any other editors thoughts? I do not really get what you mean by "doesn’t necessarily augment anything to the article" it seems to be a somewhat noted part of his views surrounding the entertainment industry which he is himself a part of (actor/musician). We include the fact he endorsed a political candidate and arguable that is less related to his main profession. With regard to the statement as written, I agree with Trillfendi. This tweet sparked coverage because it "seemingly" (per Fox News) supported the right-wing hobby horse cancel culture. But the word seemingly does a lot of work there, since what he meant by "cancelled" remains unclear. Thus, as written Glover criticised cancel culture on Twitter constitutes WP:SYNTH. It is by no means self-evident that what he meant is at all synonymous with what one will find if one clicks through the link to cancel culture. The text could be repaired with some careful copy editing, i.e. attributing the interpretation to news outlets and adding the word "seeming", or simply quoting what he said without supplying an interpretation or a potentially misleading wikilink. But that would be a fundamentally different question. As written this is not an appropriate addition.
Also: saying We include the fact he endorsed a political candidate is a form of WP:OTHERSTUFF, i.e. not a compelling argument –– and in any case he did more than just endorse Yang. Whether his collaboration with the Yang campaign is notable can be considered on its own merits.
Also also (small point): criticised is British spelling. Per MOS:VAR, for an American subject the proper spelling would be criticized. Generalrelative (talk) 03:39, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
I am fine with rewording if that is deemed necessary but to exclude these comments entirely based on the level the coverage they have recieved does not right. But the argument I was having above was either the comments in general are worthy for inclusion. The editor who removed it dissmissed the comments entirely as "false infomation". But yes looking over some of the sources again it does seem news media jumped to conclusion that he was talking about cancel culture which is something we should note.  Spy-cicle💥  Talk? 03:54, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
Cool, yeah if you were to reword your RfC question below to reflect this nuance I could support it. The number of sources which reported on this would seem to indicate that it's notable. I'm just concerned that readers might come away believing that Glover is some sort of committed culture warrior when the evidence does not seem to support that at all. Well it would be difficult now that someone else has !voted. But my suggestion above was attributing the interpretation to news outlets and adding the word "seeming", or simply quoting what he said without supplying an interpretation or a potentially misleading wikilink. In practice I think the former would be more encyclopedic, so something like: "In a [date] tweet, Glover said [X]. This was interpreted by some news outlets as a seeming allusion to cancel culture." Sorry, to be clear, I was just !voting on the inclusion of the comments at all, not necessarily the wording. Scrolling through the reliable ones among the sources below, most seemed to say his comments were non-controversially referring to "cancel culture" (e.g. The Hill, NME, KNDU/NBC Right Now, The Independent's Indy100), and some others seem to say it is mostly believed that that's what he meant (e.g. Vanity Fair, The Independent), though toss up the possibility of it meaning to be cancelled literally as in having your show canned by your network. Note that things like Insider, NewsWeek, Fox News, Salon, and Screen Rant are not reliable sources here.
I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to something of the form "[glover said X]. [reference to cancel culture]", though I think interpreted by some... as a seeming allusion is way more hedged than the way reliable sources tell the story. I would prefer something more like his comments were interpreted by [many news outlets] as referring to/a criticism of cancel culture." What I wrote is clunky, especially what I put in square brackets, but broadly speaking I just don't think the sourcing is there to introduce as much MOS:DOUBT as your suggestion does.   • No. I feel like this is one of those times when extensive media coverage doesn't warrant the addition of the information to the article. At the end of the day, we're talking about some vague, off-the-cuff Twitter posts that were reported in the media as some sort of definitive choosing of the sides in the culture wars.   • No - per WP:RECENTISM and WP:NOTNEWS. All the sources are dated May 11, with the exception of two. We are not a newspaper, we write BLP articles per the long-term, historical view, at this point, we have no idea whether his commentary will have any significant effect on his career or life. Just because content can be sourced (doesn't matter how many you find) and is verifiable, doesn't always mean it is suitable for inclusion, especially when the sources are all the same date.
