Article mis-named

[edit]

This title of this article is misleading, since it deals principally with the contest for Gibraltar, rather than the wider 'Battle for the Strait' so-called, which continued into the 1340s with the Marinid siege of Tarifa leading to the catastrophic defeat of the Marinid army at Rio Salado in 1340. After this, Marinid support of the Nasrids of Granada ceased, making possible Alfonso XI's siege and capture of Algeciras in 1342-44, followed by his siege of Gibraltar, which was cut short in 1350 by the outbreak of plague, and the onset of the Black Death.
