Spider-Man: Octo-Girl (スパイダーマン:オクトパスガール, Supaidāman: Okutopasu Gāru, lit. "Spider-Man: Octopus Girl") is a Japanese manga series written by Hideyuki Furuhashi and illustrated by Betten Court. A direct sequel to the first two volumes of Marvel Comics' The Superior Spider-Man and a spin-off of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it was published to Shōnen Jump+ in Japanese by Shueisha and by VIZ Media in English.[1][2]
The series has received a positive critical reception.
Characters
[edit]- Otoha Okutamiya – A meek, petite middle-schooler whom Otto's mind ends up bound to, mentoring her in navigating everyday life.
- Otto Octavius – A former antihero and supervillain stripped of his memories of being the Superior Spider-Man by Mephisto.
- Superior Octopus – A clone of Otto uploaded with his memories from before the events of Spider-Geddon.[3]
- Haruka Hida / Sakura Spider – A spider-powered girl stranded on Earth-616 by the events of End of the Spider-Verse.
- Ends of the Earth Otto – A clone of Otto uploaded with his memories from before the events of Ends of the Earth.
- Marika, Denko and Taka – A trio of bullies in Otoha's school.
- Bivari Bekku – The homeroom teacher of Otoha's class.
- Anna Maria 2.0 – An A.I. made by Otto.
- Kirika Kurabe – Marika's childhood friend and former child actress who pretends to be a magical girl.
- Maxine Danger – The chairwoman of Across Company who harbors the Ends of the Earth Otto.
Publication
[edit]On May 29, 2023, it was announced that a manga spin-off of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse titled Spider-Man: Octopus Girl written by Hideyuki Furuhashi and illustrated by Betten Court would begin serialization on June 20 on Shueisha's Shōnen Jump+ website and app,[4] written by Hideyuki Furuhashi and drawn by Betten Court.[5] The story revolves around Otto Octavius, who falls into a coma and has been reawakened in the body of young Japanese middle schooler named Otoha Okutamiya. After she immediately wakes up and regains control of her body, Otto's spirit inhabits a small robot and becomes Otoha's mentor, guiding her in facing off against supervillains and other clones of Otto from before his redemption.[6][7]
In February 2024, Viz Media announced that they licensed the series for English publication in the fourth quarter of 2024, retitled Spider-Man: Octo-Girl.[8]
