Nucleopedia (formerly Kernkraft-Wiki) is a German online encyclopedia focusing on the topic of nuclear energy. It was created as an open collaboration project with free and open content, in which volunteers from all over the world can participate. It runs on the MediaWiki system and is designed as a wiki editorial system.[1][2] It exclusively contains free content and does not include any commercial advertisements. The only source of income is voluntary donations for server maintenance.
History
[edit]The encyclopedia was launched on February 1, 2009, under the name Kernkraft-Wiki (abbreviated as kewiki) as a response to the societal division at the time regarding the use of commercial nuclear energy in Germany, following the approval of the 2002 law promising the early shutdown of nuclear power plants. Before the creation of Nucleopedia, the only significant source of information on nuclear energy was Wikipedia. However, it was not very suitable for this purpose, as one of its rules requires articles to maintain a neutral point of view, which was not ideal for detailed articles on this topic.[1] The idea was for the articles to also include various opinions from experts and scientists and to be objective. Wikipedia also faced limitations in the amount of technical information, as a general encyclopedia is not necessarily intended for detailed, niche information that might not interest the general reader. The only way to avoid these limitations was to create an entirely new encyclopedia focusing solely on nuclear energy.[2]
The encyclopedia was founded and is operated by Dirk Egelkraut, a German enthusiast and supporter of nuclear energy.[1][3][4] In March 2019, an official Nucleopedia Discord server was launched, where enthusiasts can discuss the further development of Nucleopedia and nuclear energy. Nucleopedia also has its own account on X (Twitter) and Facebook.[2][3]
As of October 2024, Nucleopedia contains 433 articles on nuclear energy, with over 20,000 edits made.[5]
