History

[edit]

ScaleTrains was founded in 2014 by Shane Wilson, Mike Hopkin, Joe Olvera, Paul Ellis, who all previously worked together at Horizon Hobbies. The founding journey was documented by TrainMasters and compiled into a documentary called ScaleTrains, Big Dreams.

The company made their debut at Trainfest in 2015 where they displayed their very first HO scale models, some of which were delivered to customers at the end of that same year. Their first models include the Union Pacific “Big Blow” locomotive, the“Joe Jordan” and “Jim Adams” water tender set meant to accompany the "Big Blow", and the Trinity 31K Oil Tank.[2]

Museum Quality, Rivet Counter, Operator, and Kit Classics were the first brands offered by the company, each offering different levels of detail. As the company grew they acquired MTH HO ScaleTooling, S-Helpers Service,[3] Fox Valley Models, and ExactRail[4]. More recently, in 2024, ScaleTrains launched a sub brand of Rivet Counter called HypoTypical™ which offers unique paint schemes inspired by predecessor railroads, fallen flags and heritage units.[5]

Road Trip

[edit]

In 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic affected a lot of businesses, including those in the model train hobby. In efforts to connect with members of model train clubs ScaleTrains president and his wife, Shane and Michelle Wilson, began the ScaleTrains Road Trip[6]. A few times a year the Wilsons make a trip visiting model railroad clubs. At each club they have a "Meet and Greet" where they share the story and vision of the company as well as connecting with modelers[7] face to face.
