Early life and background
[edit]Ayillian Karunakaran was born on (November 16th 1973), the son of renowned artist C. N. Karunakaran.[1] He is known for his work in Feature Film, Ad Film, Documentary & Cinematographer.
Career
[edit]Ayillian Karunakaran began his career in 1996 when he founded an advertising agency named Enroute in Ernakulam. In 1998, he moved to Dubai to work at an advertising agency. However, his passion for filmmaking led him to leave the corporate world and return to Kochi, India. His first documentary, Backwater Colours, explored art, painters, and their working styles.
Later, he worked as a cameraman in Birmingham, UK, where he filmed documentaries on international cricket players such as Wasim Akram, Shahid Afridi, and Saqlain Mushtaq for County Cricket in England.
Returning to India, he undertook extensive travel experiences, including a journey from Kochi to the Himalayas on a Bullet motorcycle. From this experience, he created The Journey Within, a 32-minute travel documentary compiled from over 1,500 minutes of footage. The film was screened at multiple short film festivals.
Shadowman Film Factory
[edit]Karunakaran founded Shadowman Film Factory, through which he has worked on various projects, including advertisements, corporate videos, and documentaries. He also worked as an associate director under acclaimed filmmaker T. V. Chandran for five movies.
As a cinematographer, he has contributed to several films and commercials, including advertisements for Renai Medicity, Malayala Manorama Thozhilveedhi,[2] Wall Max Paints,[3] Duke Paints,[4] Dessert line llc Qatar, Mr. Butler[5] and Bela casa Lighting.
In addition, he produced the documentary Karunakaran the Artist, directed by T. V. Chandran.
Other Works
[edit]In 2018, following the 2018 Kerala floods, Ayillian Karunakaran collaborated with the United Nations on a documentary.[citation needed]
In 2020, he directed Ullam, a Malayalam web series for Manorama Max, which is also available on Amazon Prime.
He has also directed a documentary for Fatima Mata Hospital in Kalpetta, Wayanad, and directed an advertisement for Anzee Ayurveda Healthcare, Wayanad. Currently, he is involved in various projects for GCC-based companies and Indian advertising agencies.
