Thelema is a philosophy of life based on the rule or law, "Do what thou wilt." The ideal of "Do what thou wilt" and its association with the word Thelema goes back to François Rabelais, but was more fully developed and proselytized by Aleister Crowley, who founded a new religious movement called Thelema based on this ideal and his 1904 book, Liber AL vel Legis. At present, many topics related to Thelema are presented in a non-encyclopedic style (e.g. do not cite sources), are mere stubs, or are missing entirely. Thelema is a notable topic and deserves to have a robust section on Wikipedia. This Wikiproject has formed in order to inspire knowledgeable Wikipedians to flesh out this little corner of the encyclopedia, conforming fully to Wikipedia guidelines and meeting high standards of writing and research. The following page is presented for suggestions only, not as a set of rules. No editor is obligated to conform. This project is intended to be a collaborative effort, so, if there is something on this page that you feel needs adjustment or otherwise, you are invited to discuss it. |

editStyle
edit- Write for the newcomer. Do not assume knowledge in your readers.
- Draw from the literature. Use verifiable sources for your edits, and cite them. Avoid personal opinion and original research.
- Stay neutral. Avoid pro and con arguments regarding topics like Crowley and OTO. Stick to the facts. When things are vague, be ready to compromise. Also, when discussing points of doctrine, do not present them as fact...provide context for said beliefs.
- Present various viewpoints. It is okay to offer different and even opposing viewpoints. However, instead of presenting every viewpoint in every paragraph, or worse, avoiding viewpoints until the topic is watered down to meaninglessness, it is best to offer discrete viewpoints within their own sections. However, be sure that these viewpoints are actually verifiable. Don't create a new section only because you have a differing opinion.
- Attacking legitimacy or value. Do not bring into question the legitimacy of any group or belief unless it is verifiable and strictly relevant to the topic at hand. Also, do not use language that places a value on other religions or lifestyles.
- Try to use standardized formats. If you are going to, say, write about one of Crowley's books, look over existing examples and use established formats.
Article introduction
editExample:
The Feast for Fire is a ceremony within Thelema intended to celebrate the advent of puberty in males. It originally appeared in The Book of the Law (AL II:41), and was again mentioned in The Gnostic Mass, written by Aleister Crowley in 1913, although he did not write an actual ritual for it.
Quotes from Liber Legis
editExample:
- "Every man and every woman is a star." (AL I:3)
- "I am alone: there is no God where I am." (AL II:23)
- "As brothers fight ye!" (AL III:59)
