So..

Does anyone know the creator or editor of this wikipedia page? It's for a school project The smartest booger (talk) 19:43, 2 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

There isn't really a single creator of the page that one could point to - it's been built up by lots of different editors over many years. The oldest version of the page I can see is from October 2001, and it looked like this. Since then, hundreds of accounts and IP addresses have built it up into its current form. First Impressionist Exhibition

edit

I believe there should be an article in English about the First Impressionist Exhibition in 1874, one of the most important exhibitions in the entire history of art. (And eventually for the other 7 Impressionist exhibitions as well. The first is simply the most urgent.) This article exists in French. I put the two [[ ]] around the text but it doesn't show red. It's the same code as, say, German Impressionists which does come up red. I'm not sure what I failed to do. I haven't done much of this.

Clicking on Société Anonyme Coopérative des Artistes Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs in this article leads one to The Batignolles Group, which is not right. They overlap but are not synonymous. It is the Société Anonyme Coopérative des Artistes Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs which holds the first Impressionist exhibition in Nadar's studio. It's mentioned in the article but should have its own article with expanded info on exactly which works were shown, which artists participated, etc. Please contact me if you have suggestions for this project. Totally agree, and the lack of an article is one of Wikipedia's major missing pages related to visual arts. I've thought of putting up a stub in the past but haven't done so feeling I couldn't do the topic justice. The article should include a large gallery of images of the exhibited artworks. Thanks for putting attention on this, hopefully your concern will get the ball rolling. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:06, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I also noticed the lack of an article on First Impressionist Exhibition, and I also think that it should have it's own article. I have started a draft for the article, which you can see here: Draft:First_Impressionist_Exhibition. If anyone else would like to help contribute, please do. Thanks, have added the creation notice to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Visual arts. Randy Kryn (talk) 11:37, 3 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've had the article draft moved to mainspace. First Impressionist Exhibition. GranCavallo (talk) 08:59, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Re: Degas

edit
Degas rejected much of this, as he believed in the primacy of drawing over colour and belittled the practice of painting outdoors

This is severely understated. Degas advocated sending out armed police to shoot the plein air Impressionists on sight. It's not clear if he meant to shoot them lethally. The original context of his comments implies he only wanted the police to deter or injure them. That's how much Degas hated people painting outside the studio.
