Rest is a gameplay mechanic synonymous with sleep. Rest is required to level up (except in Arena or Skyrim), to become a vampire, and participate in certain quests such as the Anvil Recommendation and joining the Dark Brotherhood. If resting, fatigue (stamina), magicka (unless born under the Atronach birthsign), and health will restore to maximum. The amount of fatigue, magicka, and health restored is irrelevant (except in Arena) to the amount of time slept; sleeping just one hour will restore all bars to maximum.

Waiting[]

Main article: Wait

Waiting does not count as rest nor does sitting on chairs or benches. Beds not owned by the player cannot be slept in. It is also impossible to rest while trespassing. Most guilds have beds that are free for members to use. A bed can also be rented for a night at an Inn and, when buying a house, it comes with a bed.

Arena[]

Dungeons and the wilderness can be rested in, as long as there are no enemies nearby. The Eternal Champion cannot rest in a town unless resting in an Inn. Resting is used to pass time, communicate with Ria Silmane and restore fatigue, spell points and health. Killed enemy bodies vanish after resting.

Daggerfall[]

Resting will restore health; if trying to rest in someone's house, the guards will bring the trespasser to a trial. It is also illegal to rest in a city. Dungeons can be rested in. Rooms can also be rented in an inn for a certain amount of hours.

Morrowind[]

Resting in a city is illegal, so the Nerevarine must go outside of a town to rest or find a bed. Outside of a city, if there are no enemies around, the Nerevarine can rest on the solid ground without a bed. If the Nerevarine goes to another owned bed and is witnessed by others, they will get a bounty.

Once the Nerevarine has killed Dagoth Gares, Ash Zombies will interrupt their sleep in Ald'ruhn, Balmora or Vivec. Ald'ruhn attacks will stop after Hanarai Assutlanipal is killed, Balmora attacks will stop after Dagoth Fovon is killed, and Vivec attacks will stop after Dagoth Hlevul is killed.[1]

If The Elder Scrolls III: Tribunal has been installed, and the Nerevarine has not started the Tribunal main quest, the Nerevarine will be attacked by The Dark Brotherhood if they try to go to bed.

Oblivion[]

Beds (Oblivion)
Main article: Rest (Oblivion)

Resting offers no additional bonuses, and is only used to restore fatigue, magicka and health, level up and to advance certain quests.

Skyrim[]

Main article: Rest (Skyrim)

Resting will restore stats and save the game. Beds, sleeping pads, and even coffins can be rested in. The Dragonborn cannot rest in a bed "owned" by another character. If said character dies, the bed is no longer owned, and can be rested in freely.
