- For other uses, see Eastmarch.
Eastmarch is one of the Nine Holds of Skyrim, located in the east of the province, and is one of the four oldest holds known collectively as the Old Holds. The zone shares a border with the Rift to the south, Morrowind to the east and Bleakrock Isle is located to the northeast of the hold, just off the coasts of Solstheim and Vvardenfell.[1]
Background[]
- "One of the "Old Holds," Eastmarch was among the first regions of Skyrim settled by the Nords when they arrived from Atmora. Its capital, Windhelm, is the oldest continuously inhabited human settlement in Tamriel, and was founded by Ysgramor himself."

The zone stretches from Skyrim's jagged, northern Velothi Mountains and the frozen Sea of Ghosts into the southern volcanic tundra, which is inhabited only by a few hardy settlers, and formidable creatures, including giants, mammoths, trolls and even vampires.[1] Locals sometimes exchange whispers about the dangerous menaces that stalk the land.[source?] Hot springs, giant camps and ruins are common throughout the south of Eastmarch while the north of the zone is much more civilized, thanks to the presence of the ancient city of Windhelm and the surrounding towns and villages.[1]
Despite its size and importance, Eastmarch only has one major city, Windhelm, which sits at the mouth of the White River which flows out into the Sea of Ghosts.[1] The Windhelm docks provides a vital link to trade with the rest of the Ebonheart Pact, and there are several small fishing fleets in operation.[source?] The Velothi Mountains, which span the entire eastern tip of Skyrim, create a natural border with Morrowind. The mountains are impassable, save for one pass outside of Fullhelm Fort north of Fort Virak in Stonefalls, that leads into and out of the Rift.[1]
Eastmarch covers much of Skyrim's eastern border with Morrowind. The surrounding holds are Winterhold to the north, the Pale and Whiterun to the west and The Rift to the south.[2]
Central Eastmarch is a volcanically active area, plains with steaming gas leaking in between cracks in the ground, colorful, mineral filled bodies of water, and geysers. The far west of the hold, a cold, snowy tundra, resembles much of the rest of northern Skyrim and the northern tundra is where the hold's capital Windhelm lies. The east is composed of the Velothi mountain range, which extends all the way down to Stonefalls in Morrowind.[1]
Locations[]
- Main article: Locations (Online)
The following are locations accessible in Eastmarch and, with the exception of unmarked locations, are discoverable on the map. Points of Interest serve as locations with unique side quests, while cities serve as the centralised areas with multiple sublocations and act as a hub for services and merchants. Explanations of the types of locations are provided in the main locations page.
Quests[]
- Main article: Quests (Online)
Eastmarch features a series of zone story quests and unrelated side quests. The zone story quests tie into the Ebonheart Pact's overarching storyline and carries on from Stormhaven before continuing to The Rift, but it is not necessary to complete the story quests for zones prior to those in Eastmarch. Side quests are non-sequential and can be completed in any order, except where one carries on from another, and repeatable quests can be completed multiple times: weekly for arenas and trials and daily for all others. Pointer quests are optional zone quests that send the Vestige to the tarting location of another zone quest.

Trivia[]
- The outline of Eastmarch on the map of Tamriel does not match that of other media such as that which is seen in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the Tamriel Anthology Map. Responding to this in a post on June 19, 2015, entitled 'Eastmarch and Skuldafn appear to be wrong, geographically, in Elder Scrolls Online,' then-ZeniMax Online Studios Loremaster Lawrence Schick wrote, in the character of Phrastus of Elinhir, "Our latter-day Nords are not well known for the scholarly attainments, and cartography is not one of their strongpoints. On their maps, sites of great importance—to Nords, that is—are often distorted and exaggerated. So it is with the eerie aerie of Skuldafn, which holds great significance for our superstitious northern brethren. They have never been comfortable with the fact that the Dark Elves hold the west coast of the Inner Sea all the way up to Blacklight; in some cases their maps elide that fact entirely. But it is there nonetheless."[3]
