Diseases are biological infections that cause negative effects when contracted. Symptoms usually include lowered attributes or skills. Diseases are contracted when fighting creatures, the undead, or even people. Common diseases such as Collywobbles and Astral Vapors can be contracted simultaneously. Contracted diseases can be viewed in the "Active Effects" section of the Character Menu.

Cure[]
- Main article: Cure Disease
The afflicted person remains diseased until it is cured. There are several methods for curing diseases, these include:
- Drinking a potion of Cure Disease
- Praying at a Chapel or Altar of the Nine
- Casting a Cure Disease spell from the Restoration school of Magicka.
In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, consuming Mandrake Root is recommended above other methods. They are much cheaper than potions of cure disease, weigh less, and raise the Alchemy skill when consumed. They can be found in most shops carrying Alchemy ingredients.
Resistance[]
- Main article: Resist Disease
Argonians, Bosmer, vampires, and werewolves harbor a natural resistance to disease. Apparel can be enchanted to increase disease resistance. Although these methods may garner 100% resistance, it is still possible to contract some diseases. For example, if fighting a swarm of rats for a sustained period of time, then diseases such as Feeble Limb can still be contracted.
Alchemy[]
Unless the ingredient has either "Cure Disease" or "Resist Disease" as its first effect, the ingredients must be combined with related ingredients via alchemy to make a potion with the effect.

Types of disease[]
Both vampirism and lycanthropy usually prevent the contraction of other diseases. An exception to this rule is that lycanthropy may still be contracted by an individual afflicted with Pyphoric Hemophilia, which cures the infected individual of vampirism. Also, in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, other diseases may, very rarely, be contracted by a werewolf.
