Corundum ore is used to make corundum ingots at a smelter, with two ore making one ingot. Smelting it together with an iron ore produces steel ingots. Corundum can be used to craft and improve certain armor and weapons, and with the expansion The Elder Scrolls V: Hearthfire, corundum is used to craft a number of items as well.
Corundum Ore Veins[]
Corundum ore veins can be mined with a pickaxe. Each vein, when mined, has a chance to produce a precious gem. The ores in the mines respawn after one month in-game time, while ores found outdoors generally respawn after ten days.

Corundum Ore can be found in the following places:
Four in Dead Drop Mine after the Dead Drop Falls archery puzzle. There are several pieces of ore here as well.
Three east of Lakeview Manor and south of the guardian stones and west of the cave exit/entrance that leads into Helgen, in a small depression near the Shrine of Talos (these may spawn as iron veins instead). The Shrine of Talos is due east of the apiary at Lakeview Manor. The veins are on top of the mountain behind the Shrine, directly south of the guardian stones. From the guardian stones head east along the path. It will switch back to the west continue to follow until the fork and take the left turn. There will be a sign for town directions and immediately beyond that a small rock pile. There is a natural path to the right of the rock pile continue to follow that. There will be a fallen tree to the right running alongside the path and a stump immediately beyond that. Between the stump and the rock to the left of the tree stump will be a couple rock outcroppings with a lone tree. Directly towards the tree and just beyond that will be the ore deposits.
Two in Broken Helm Hollow, east of Riften. When inside the main chamber, go all the way to the back and pull the chain. The other is by the river in the main room.
One south of Dawnstar. Follow the winding path in back of the barracks up into the hills. Just right of the path. Downhill and southwest of the Nightcaller Temple.
One northeast of the Battle-Born Farm. East of the road and directly west of the spit of land which juts out into the river.
One north of the Battle-Born Farm, tucked into Whiterun's city wall. On a small plateau just above a quicksilver ore vein.
One near Uttering Hills Cave. Head up the snowy mountain slope to the south. The vein is up in the far southwest corner tucked into the rocks and trees.
One directly north of Saarthal near the coast. It is slightly south but still within view of the coastal Shrine of Talos, tucked into the base of a glacier and some rocks.
One on a small island west from Septimus Signus's Outpost. (It is a rather small deposit, easily missed)
One due north from a Shrine of Talos, northeast from Ysgramor's Tomb.
One in Broken Oar Grotto just under a wooden ramp just before reaching the room with the giant wooden structure (where most of the Blackblood Mauraders are).
One vein south-southwest from the entrance of Kagrenzel. When facing the entrance door turn left then right and descend some outdoor stairs to find an Iron Ore vein, from the Iron ore vein follow the rock face on the left until it bends left (south) and continue to follow it a short way, the Corundum Ore vein will be directly ahead.
