Storylines[]

House move (29 August 1985)[]

Pauline and Arthur Fowler contact Walford Council after they have just had a new baby and 45 Albert Square, is becoming overcrowded and they apply to be rehoused somewhere bigger, but they neglect to tell Pauline's mother, Lou Beale, of their intention.

Alan Grout arrives at 45 Albert Square to discuss the move, but receives a hostile welcome from Lou. She is furious to discover that the council want to move them out of the house she has lived in for most of her life. She tears up the Fowlers' application form and orders Alan out of her house.

23 Albert Square Eviction (29 September 1992)[]

Colin Simpson serves Ricky Butcher an eviction notice for 23 Albert Square, where he had been squatting with Mark Fowler, Mandy Salter, and his wife, Sam. The notice instructs them to vacate the premises within 72 hours.


Christmas Lunch (15 December 2015)[]

Norman is the Manager for Housing at Walford Council, he is first seen in Beales. When he, Tamwar Masood and other Council colleagues are having a Christmas lunch. Babe Smith tells him that they have been trying to get through to someone as Cora Cross has nowhere to go and is homeless. He at first says he will not be blackmailed and even sticks to his decision after Babe gets her friends to sit on the floor to stage a sit in but after Tamwar secretly post a picture of Norman talking to Babe and posts it on the council's social media feed with the caption "Housing Officers Feast while Pensioners go Homeless." He changes his mind and gives Cora somewhere to stay.

Bin Collection (2016)[]

In September, the residents of Albert Square started to complain about Walford Council’s new bin collection schedule after it was changed from weekly to fortnightly.

On 30 September, Carmel Kazemi mentions she has sent multiple emails to Maria who works for the Waste Department at Walford Council.

Market Closure & Walford Common[]

In 2017 the council attempts to close bridge street market, but its plans are dropped when a bus crashes into the bridge. Later in the summer, they attempt to pave over Walford common, but the public object.

Ian runs to be a councillor (1 November 2019)[]

Ian hears that a councillor called Alan has had a heart attack and Ian applies to be a councillor in his place.

2024 market closure[]

In late 2024, the council once again attempt to close Bridge Street Market. The residents and traders object, but the council ignore them. Ruby Allen blackmails a councillor to save Bridge Street, but the on road is still threatened. Honey Mitchell, Stacey Slater and Ruby are able to stop it.
