"The Golden Baboon Head" is the second episode of the first season of the Dreamworks•Apple TV+ series, Curses!.
Synopsis[]
Pandora, Russ and Sky befriend two unlikely allies while racing against time to capture a creature on the loose in the manor.
Plot[]
Sky, Russ, Alex, Stanley and Larry flee from the Golden Baboon Head artifact that has come to life, but accidentally run into a dead end corridor filled with old dolls and other toys. Stanley and Alex try to soothe the baboon with a wind-up monkey toy that at first plays a calm tune, but then unleashes a loud trumpet blare that startles the baboon head, causing it to run away.
Unfortunately, the Vanderhouven’s left the secret door from the restricted wing to the manor open and the baboon head flees into the house. They now have to hunt it down, which won’t be easy considering how big the house is. Stanley and Larry are reluctant to leave the restricted wing as they where ordered by Corneilus to stay there, but Pandora assures them it’s okay.
At Larry’s suggestion, the family first locks all the doors and windows to keep the Baboon Head inside. Then they search every room. Larry and Stanley find the head, but it escapes them. To make matters worse, the Baboon Head damages the houses’ electric panel, resulting in a blackout in most of the manor.
Pandora suggests calling animal control, but Sky advises against it as this is not a normal situation. Stanley backs her up, claiming that they should be very careful who they share information with as there are many people out there who would be interested in the content of the restricted wing. Sky comes with the plan to use the old dog cage to catch the baboon head, which Pandora names Fangs. However, she doesn’t allow Russ and Pandora to come with her and orders them to barricade themselves into the kitchen.
While Sky, Stanley and Larry fetch the cage, Pandora and Russ try to figure out what their dad meant with his final message about making things right. After Sky returns with the cage, the group wonders how they could lure Fangs into the cage. When Sky mentions researching the artifact, Stanley gets an idea. He leads the group to Corneilis’ personal collection of journals about all his journey’s and collected artifacts. Unfortunately, the journals are in no way organized or even in chronological order, so the Vanderhouven’s have to read through all of them in hopes of finding something useful.
Pandora eventually gets tired of the reading and explores the restricted wing with Stanley. She notices a large hour glass that she missed before. Stanley claims this hourglass is linked to the family curse, and counts down the time till the next Vanderhouven, in this case Russ, will turn to stone. Then Russ finally finds something useful; an old photo about a baboon-shaped temple in Congo, where Fangs originally came from.
Larry calls the group back upstairs because something has triggered the manors’ bell system, with which in the old days the house staff could be summoned to any room. Realizing Fangs must be triggering the bells, the group searches every room for which the corresponding bell rings, but finds nothing. Then Russ realizes the bells are triggered through ropes that are inside the manors’ walls, and deduces Fangs might be hiding in the walls too. He is right, but Fangs escapes again.
The group chases Fangs to a room filled with stuffed animals. Sky dons a medieval armor and enters the room with the cage. Fangs attacks her and Sky fights with the head, until Russ and Larry interfere, with Russ throwing Larry at Fangs, knocking the baboon into the cage.
With Fangs captured, the family now has to decide what to do with him. Russ realizes that Fangs is not evil, but was just trying to get back home to his temple. This in turn makes him realize what Alex meant; they need to undo the damage Corneilis caused by returning the stolen artifacts to their rightful places. Thus, the family prepares for a trip to The Congo.
