They started a war as soon as they kicked us out of our new homes and onto the street. People around the world need me. Millions of them.
Karli Morgenthau to Sam Wilson

"The Whole World Is Watching" is the fourth episode of the Disney+ streaming television series, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and was released on April 9, 2021.

Synospis[]

John Walker loses patience with Sam and Bucky as they learn more about Karli Morgenthau.

Plot[]

In a flashback, Bucky has his HYDRA programming removed thanks to Ayo and the Wakandans. In the present, he convinces Ayo to let them have Zemo for eight hours until they can find Karli. They learn that Karli is to hold a funeral for her adoptive mother Donya Madani and locate the shelter where she was located. Sam also has Sharon use her connections to keep an eye out for them. No one will give answers to Bucky or Sam, but Zemo manages to coerce a group of children to help them know where the funeral is being held using Turkish delights, but keeps the information to stay with the group.

They are confronted by Walker and Hoskins who demand to be let in on their plans and they reluctantly concede. They arrive at the funeral, but Sam advises to go alone. He confronts Karli and points out that her actions are those of a supremacist as she plans to use the extra vials of the serum to recruit more members and her killings do not prove her point, which she begins to notice. However, an impatient Walker attempts to arrest Karli and a fight and chase break out. Zemo manages to shoot Karli, who still escapes, and destroys the vials, but Walker knocks him out and manages to save one of them.

Afterwards, Walker and Hoskins attempt to arrest Zemo, but Ayo and the Dora Milaje arrive and fight them. Sam and Bucky stop the fight, but Zemo manages to escape. Humiliated over being defeated by the Milaje, Walker consults with Hoskins about the possibility of taking the serum if given the opportunity and seems favorable to it. Karli wants to move forward with her plans despite learning that the Power Broker still wants his serum back. She calls Sarah and threatens her and her children and asks that she give Sam the coordinates so that they can meet with one another.

Sam and Bucky confront Karli, but quickly learn that Walker and Hoskins are on their trail. They fight Karli and her forces as Walker unleashes his enhanced abilities after having taken the serum. Hoskins is captured as Walker begins to rampage through the building. The heroes fight the Flag Smashers, but during the battle, Karli accidentally sends Hoskins into a pillar, killing him. Walker, enraged over his friend's death, manages to chase down one of the Flag Smashers and kills him with his shield. As Karli looks on in shock, Walker's actions are filmed by bystanders and he appears unresponsive.

Trivia[]

  • The end credits music is different in this episode due to the tonal shift of the episode's end.
  • The title of the episode cleverly spoils the ending of the episode.
  • When Walker asks Sam if he should put down the shield, it might be a reference to Captain America: Civil War when Steve abandoned his shield to Tony after their fight and left with Bucky. The same music is also played after Walker fights the Dora Milaje.
  • John Walker parallels a scene of Steve previously fighting such as Walker walking with a gun and his shield parallels when Steve went into battle in 1944 with the gun and shield.
  • Zemo bribing a kid with Terkish Delights is what also happened in The Lion Witch and the Wardrobe, when the white witch bribes one of the children with the same snack.
  • During the fight between John Walker and the Dora Milaje, a panther's growl is heard, referencing the Black Panther.
  • Bucky swings his arm around to reload it just like he did in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
  • After Walker's defeat against the Dona Maje, the same music by composer Henry Jackman, from Captain America: Civil War, is heard, after Steve and Tony's fight.
  • Walker jumping out of the window parallels Steve jumping out the elevator in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it could also be the reverse of Steve jumping up through a window in Captain America: Civil War.
  • The final scene was filmed in Prague.
  • Sam receives a text from Karli, at 3:12. This is a reference to the issue, Captain America #312, which is the comic debut of the Flag-Smasher, whom Karli is based on.
  • Bucky can speak Wakandan, which he likely learned during the two years he spent there, during the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.
